Hello from Down Under

I am a new subscriber to this site and I thought I'd make myself know. I live just outside Sydney Australia but was born and raised in Elgin Illinois (long story). I am an avid cross stitcher but will try just about any form of stitching. I learned about your site from the books by Monica Ferris (which I love by the way!). I look forward to learning from all of you and sharing my experiences - and Australia - as well.

Welcome to RCTN, Sandy. Tell us a bit more about yourself, the stitching you have done, if you have photos of your work online, and what sort of "Babies" (cats, dogs, birds, gerbils, etc.) you have. Be prepared for a lot of "off topic" posts. We're a very chatty group here and are prone to talk and argue about most anything :-). CiaoMeow >^;;^<

For most of us, the difference is likely what you are thinking. "Counted" cross stitch is done using a chart and on a ground fabric where you must count the threads or holes for each stitch and then the number of stitches needed. Non-counted cross stitch (part of what I call surface embroidery) would likely be done on a fabric with the design already printed on it. More often than not, we just say cross stitch, with the understanding that it is counted work. If we mean non-counted cross stitch, we will usually say something like "blue line" or printed cross stitch. I'm one of those who stitch most anything that has a needle and ground fabric and fibers :-). I don't care if it is an inexpensive kit or printed or counted or done with cotton or wool or silk. As long as I am stitching *something* I'm happy. CiaoMeow >^;;^<

Hello Sandy,

There used to be quite a few Aussies on here, but I believe we're down to a handful these days.

A bunch of us who lived in Sydney used to meet up at various shops and inspire each other to purchase more stash.

I now live in Melbourne, where I was originally from, and don't know any other rctners down here.

Hope you're enjoying Wollongong. :)

All for now.

Welcome. Up here in Nova Scotia on the eastern seaboard of Canada we also have what we call Hen Scratching. It is cross stitch done on gingham, or checked cotton, and it was very popular years ago as a fairly quick, inexpensive way to decorate everyday items, such as tablecloths and napkins.

Vague examples here

Welcome, Sandy! You've come to the right place, and you'll fit right in!

You were right about the distinction between "counted" cross stitch and "stamped" cross stitch.

If you'd like to put photos of your work online, many of us from this group participate in a yahoo group for just that purpose. Let us know if you're interested in joining and we can send you the information.

Sandy - welcome - and I have a cousin - from Long Island who ended up in Jalong! And this is her move from further out..... She's been there for 34 years now - one kid with dual citizenship, the 2 younger (in their 20s) boys are Aussie.

Yup - tell us, please. Anyhow, we're a usually fun group - with the occasional bicker-fest. Glad to have you.
