ISO Needlework Festivals & Classes

Hi guys, Well, it's looking like CATS will be a bust for the SouthEastern part of the country. The only show they have listed at the website is for Hershey in late September. Janet and I are looking for something in the SouthEast that will be within driving distance for both of us -- Atlanta for MOI and Birmingham for her. We did find the Celebration of Needlework show that is held in Nashua, NH in May -- much too far for us to travel :-). Fortunately for both of us, it IS held in Louisville, KY the 3rd weekend of September -- that's about 4.5 hrs for Janet and 5.5 hrs for MOI to drive. Can anyone recommend any other needlework festivals offering classes that would be in this geographical vicinity? We can easily "do" just about anywhere in Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, North and South Carolina and Northern Florida. I'm looking for something that is within about a six hour drive or an approx. 400 mile radius as long as the majority of travel is on the Interstate system. I tried Googling Needlework with all sorts of other things like Festival, Seminar, Classes, etc. but CATS and Celebration are the only things I have managed to find. Any and all suggestions taken under consideration :-)! Thanks & CiaoMeow >^;;^<

I think the ANG National this fall is in Baltimore - but that's a cheap SW flight away from you. Check out their website for the info.

I'll have to check this stuff out. Do either of you know if actual classes are offered? Thanks for the info :-). Now, back to the show Celebration of Needlework show. The online info doesn't have any class prices listed. Has anyone reading actually taken classes in the last year or so from this show? If so, could you post a ball park figure for classes so that Janet and I can sort of start getting our heads around the "guesstimates" of what we might spend on classes? For CATS, I always knew that the cheapest class I would likely take would be about $75 and the most expensive no more than $125. Visa and I always budgeted about $300 for classes so I would really like to have a general what to expect cost wise. Not ever having been to Celebration of Needlework, I don't know if $125 would be the low end for classes or the high end! I do know that some of the classes for other shows -- especially those featuring top name designers and multiple days -- can easily start at $150 and go much higher. OK -- thanks for any cost info anyone can give me. CiaoMeow >^;;^<

From past experience - $75 to about $200 (with all sorts of fancy bits like a Nantucket basket, silks, silk ribbons)

I paid $98. last year for a class with Betsy Stinner. Worth every penny IMO. She designs a doodle cloth trinket and the Sampler with all the silk threads and cloth. A lovely work book and as I took the Shaker Samplar she gave a slide presentation and lecture on the Shaker Life style as will as photos in the booklet. A couple of years ago I took a class from Catherine Strickler ($120.00 IIRC) and again the accompanying illustrated work book was exceptional and the stitches challenging. Less expensive are the Lectures and the Gadget Girl program. There are Make it and Take seminars throughout the day as well. The Saturday night event was a lot of fun and not to be missed. Sounds like it's right about where Janet and I expected. I have yet to take a class, regardless of the cost, that hasn't been worth the money paid! Do you have any idea if they offer what CATS calls the Stitcher's Lounge? It's a room that is open all the time with tables so the stitchers can gather and stitch. CATS always had Dazor mag lamps on all the tables but that's not necessary -- I can bring my own :-). CiaoMeow >^;;^<

ANG National Seminar is a ton of classes. 10 days worth (maybe only 7 now). They offer 1/2 day, 1 day, 2 day and 4 day classes. The seminar should have a link on their website. The whole program for the fall show will come out next month, and registration is "premier" usually til about April 10 or so, then the rest until it's full, or something like that. I've taken some really great classes there, as well as just done studio time - for example with Joyce Lukomski. Everyone worked on what they wanted, but we did color theory - thread selection workshop at the same time.

The prices vary in a couple of categories - by either 1-2 days of class,

3-5, or more. You can be there the whole time - and just take the class amount that you want. And there's an exhibition, great bookstore, some outings, etc. Check it out - I'm pretty sure you have to join National to get the seminar booklet and register. IIRC, Jeanne in BC went 2 years ago - we were going to do a class with Vima Michelli together - but I had to cancel - however I believe she went and did the class.

I know there are classes at Celebration - but I don't think it's going to work for me with starting a new job shortly.

Cheryl, dear, you need a cup of coffee or four. We won't be anywhere near you guys -- we will be in Louisville, KY -- NOT Nashua, NH

-- LOLOL! Of course, that's unless YOU are planning on taking the time AND spending the $$ to come to the show in KY???? Even if you could afford to spend money (yeah, sure, with two kids in the house) on travel, hotel, meals, AND classes, imagine what the house would look like once you got home!!! Like I said -- more coffee dear :-)))))). I would love to come up there and attend the show and I just might talk DH into it one of these days. I would much rather come back up in the winter and **hopefully** get a real sleigh ride instead of a "Stealth" sleigh ride :-). CiaoMeow >^;;^<

Dear Tia Mary said

I apologize for not responding quicker -- I developed a not so mild case of obsessive compulsive behavior and had to complete a photo gallery of pictures of my late father. It took longer than expected because the scans from my semi- computer literate brother in law were so humongous that they maxed out my computer to the point that I'm going to replace it

Anyhoooo, class listings for SAS in Knoxville can be found at

I heard, several classes were overflowing. I don't know if it's kosher to contact the registrar in advance of sending money to see if classes you're interested in are full so if any look good to you, give it a try.
