Oh, Cheryl - I know the feeling. Any chance he could practice in his room? Or invest in some headphones....either for him, so he can listen to himself with the amp turned way down, or the "silencer" ones for yourself!

I have the same thing here with DD, who wants to pound the piano any time it suits - sometimes midnight, sometimes when I'm watching TV - and the piano isn't nearly as portable as a guitar!

My DS has been emoting away on his Vile Lyn for an hour now and, while I must admit his technique is improving rapidly, I'VE HAD IT!!! He's practising 'Danny Boy' and you have to admit, this is not one of the best tunes to be played on the enraged tomcat that is my son's Vile Lyn. God bless his little soul - he's trying! But I am only human and so let's nick off to a lovely South Pacific island and take our stitching for comfort. And there will only be birdsong and the lull of the waves to soothe the tormented ear...

Then again. P'raps it would be more efficient to send the DSes to the island, where they can practice 'Star Spangled Danny Boy' to their hearts content?

Idea: get decent recordings of all of the above and ask him to play along with them at a slightly reduced volume. That might do something to abate the onset of your madness? I can't begin to imagine 'Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring' played on a lectric guitar: it must be purgatory for you!!!! Poor thing! =:-O

Perhaps instead of the Marines invading Iran (as BushBaby seems to have in mind), we can send the DSes and their "musical" instruments? Shouldn't take long and the whole country will phone the Embassy begging to surrender.....

I'd be happy to send you my daughter's recorder (flute). ;) He could use that for a while, instead.

My DS has five of those, from the tenor one, about two foot long down to the little sopranino, just over six inches. In our house, they're called 'The D*vil's Instrument'! Why don't you send your DD with the boys? I bet she'd just love to play 'Star Spangled Danny Girl'?

Actually, it sounds pretty good. It's all picking rather than strumming and when he gets is right it's good. Not great, but good.

Now - I should search for the recording I have of the piece played on classical guitar.

Nah - Recorder is the required instrument for all 4th grade students. DD is just completing 4th grade.

Perhaps you'd all best be thankful that your offspring are not learning to play the bagpipes (noisy) or the double bass (transport problems) Bruce

Bagpipes might be nearly as painful as electric guitar - with the amplifier nearly any noise is possible.

I love the thought of "Star Spangled Danny Boy." We should come up with a medley, a la "Hooked on Classics", of all the overdone tunes. Add "Stairway to Heaven" and "Memories" -- and what else?
