OT-Kentucky Derby

A horse named Street Sense just came from 19th out of a field of 20 to win the Derby. An incredible ride.

And for those of you who were betting on the color of Her Majesty's hat, it was green.

Now, I want to know, what is the point of being Queen if your "lifelong dream" of attending the Kentucky Derby has to wait till you're old and grey? If I were Queen, I would simply inform my staff that I AM going there every year, and they will schedule around it.

As soon as I finish with my proper Kentucky Mint Julep in the proper silver julep cup (which serves as a vase the rest of the year), it's back to celebrating Cinco de Mayo. I have enough chips and guacamole for as many of you as can get here this evening.

You forgot to mention that her hat was indeed lime green but it had a wide fuscia bow and ribbon wrapped around the crown. To my eye that was an odd and very bright color combination, but I guess anything goes at the Derby.

For her I'll bet this is just another race. After all, she is British and they have Ascot.

I like your style-enjoy your celebration.

Who the hell said it is her lifelong dream?? Actually she has made some very private visits to Kentucky. The ex-british Amasador has a horse farm nearby, and she has visited and stayed there. She is extraodinarily knowledgeable about horses, training etc, and has always had a good stable. I read that she has had horses trained in Kentucky; at Farrish's establishment IIRC. I wonder if she calls it the way we Brits do, or the Americanised version. I also wonder if in UK it is now similar to US race, rather than the more dignified way it was run when I was young!!

I thnk being a Queen, like Elizabeth, must be the worst job in the world for a woman!!

I'm in complete agreement about that. She really never had much of a life. All that glamour and doing things that others planned for her, and never any real fun. I wonder if she ever just said to hell with it and let her hair down for a bit? I hope she did.

Lucille,

It isn't glamor; that was for Diana. Imagine being in the public eye constantly; have tummy cramps, PMS, morning sickness or whatever, but you are there being gracious and caring. She also has a box of documents delivered from parliament for her to read, initial etc. The poor woman is, in the public eye, the symbol of Great Britain, as is the flag for the United States. However she is living and breathing and truly must get so damn tired. She was crowned on my 17th birthday, and she was just

  1. I think maybe that is why my heart goes out to her. Fortunately, in those days there was not the massive media presence that there is now.

We looked forward to the occasional pictures from their holidays in Balmoral etc. In fact, I am so damn old ( you o* f*) that she was in the Army in WW2. Motorpool, yes, but I bet it was fun for her, changing oil, and checking brakes. After she married Philip, a Lt in the Navy, they were stationed in Malta, and from what I rmember she really enjoyed being a Navy wife, albeit, heir to the throne. Then her dad died of lung cancer, and that was the end of any freedom she had.

Yes, I am a royalist, but I suspect she will be the last of the line who took on the job with love, duty and dignity.

I think I will get off my soapbox now, and wash the kitchen floor LOLOL

Actually, as least as reported by the media back home (as our Governor went to meet her), she said so herself.

Now whether or not she was simply saying it to be polite, that's a whole 'nother issue.

As for royalty...in Norway, as in England, I think when the current monarchs pass away...that's the end of that. I'm not really convinced that the next generation of rulers possess the right attitude or social graces. It's truly going to be the end of an era.

I'm with you, Gill! Becky A.

When she was first married and Philip was in the RN they spent time in Malta and she was just a pretty average naval wife, it has been said those were the happiest days of her life after time spent fixing trucks during the war years.

Yes all that and she is one of the very knowledgeable persons who knows nearly all the blood lines of the various racehorses. She is reckoned (amongst men too) to be one of the best horse breeders(race horses) there is.

I'm not a monarchist but I have admired her for perceiving her duty and following it unswervingly. An outwardly rather frumpy, dull woman but on closer inspection rather forward for a woman of her age.
