OT: My Preggers DNiece

Hi Guys, Sometime ago, I posted about my DNiece Kelsey. She's the one who was diagnosed as severely bi-polar and was in and out of different mental health facilities from about 15 years old until she was about 19. She turned up preggers and my sister and I were not at all pleased. She and her boyfriend decided they should not terminate the pregnancy and he has been a real prince for her -- thank heavens! Oh, this is the niece I searched for the rabbit birth chart, etc. for. Anyway, she's off to hospital this morning with the beginnings of labor. Please send prayers, good thoughts, good vibes, etc. -- whatever you prefer -- that she manages to get through the next few months without having any mental health issues. She is terrified she will suffer from postpartum depression. Her Mom and her Dr. have both told her that she & her DH (they got married on 13 January) have an edge over other new moms & dads. Since they have both suffered from clinical depression, they know what to look for. He will keep a VERY close eye on her and whisk her off to the Dr. immediately if it looks like she is getting depressed. Thanks bunches & CiaoMeow >^;;^<

Sending good thoughts and prayers her way. Do let us know how it turns out!

I always thought the 3-6 weeks was the *hardest* part. For three weeks, you can do okay with interrupted sleep, but after three weeks it really takes its toll. Around 3 weeks you're so bone-weary and the attention from others (positive feedback) starts to wane. And the baby is still all give, give, give...until that magical 6-week time when the smiles come, and you get some "return" - feedback, encouragement, whatever you want to call it - from your child. And you start to know what each day will bring and sense each others' temperaments/patterns. You might warn your niece about that period. Knowing that others have gone before might help. [And if you're of a mind to send over a frozen dinner/gift certificate for carryout, delay it until then!]

I remember with my first, the frustration of not knowing what to expect on any given day. I started marking a calendar "B" for bad or "G" for good at the end of the day, when I could see the whole day in retrospect, and took heart when I looked it over and so many more G's than B's...helped to see it in perspective and just the heat of the moment.

Ah, the coping mechanisms we devise!

Thanks for the kind words :-). I like the marking the calendar thing -- I'll have to let Kelsey know about that. Johan (don't ask LOL) Lauren Rust arrived last night at about 11:40PM (Austin, TX time). IIRC, he was 7# 14oz and 20" long -- a nice sized baby boy. My DSis was thrilled when she phoned to let me know. Now to start the Peter Rabbit birth sampler and hopefully get it finished before the kid is in high school -- LOLOL! CiaoMeow >^;;^<

someone asked her how it felt to be a "great-grandma"? Her reply: I've always been a "great" grandma! - so I think you been a "great" aunt for quite a few years!

I've often wondered why you become a GRANDmother or GRANDfather and not a GRANDaunt or GRANDuncle. Why is the term GREATaunt or GREATuncle used? Does anyone know for sure? I've always assumed it's done that way so that the grandparents don't have to share part of their new "name" with anyone else. Odd, the way the language works, isn't it?? CiaoMeow >^;;^<

FWIW - in DH's family they use the term Grand-Aunt in referring to that one generation step aside.

I always wondered that, too, so I just started calling myself and DGN&Ns Grand-----s. No one has mentioned the change, at least out loud, so it must sound sort of natural. That or they just quietly think I'm weird, which is okay with me, too! I don't like being like everyone else! LOL!

When I married DH#1, at age 25, I immediately became a great-aunt!! It sure seemd strange.

Well, behave yourselves here, I am off for a week, and will be back next Thursday. probably very little online time, and Google is a PITA to use!
