OT: Sick Cat Baby

Hi Guys, Reno (Black Cat) has not been well and had to go to the Baby Dr. Thursday. The babies eat dry food and Reno has always thrown up when she eats too fast. Since the summer, she has been throwing up more and more and I realized after returning from Austin on Tuesday that she was getting tooooo skinny! The dry food is available all the time but DH usually gives the babies some "fancy" dry food as a treat in the morning and evening. I told him to start giving Black Cat canned food (always a VERY special treat in the past) as her treat in the morning and evening. Since I am home most of the time, I started feeding her a little bit during the day whenever she came into the kitchen and asked. Anyway, the Dr. said everything looked OK but Reno had lost a WHOLE pound in the last 3 months -- a LOT for a cat who only weighed 9# to begin with!!! Blood work was sent to the lab and results came back yesterday. Everything looks good, kidney levels are a bit high but not bad for a cat who is at least 12 years old. We are still waiting on the results of the heart worm test and the Dr. said house cats (mine NEVER get out) can get heart worm as easily as outside cats! Dr. said if the heart worm comes back OK, then the problem is likely just that Reno is getting to be an old lady cat and just can't handle the dry food anymore. She has also been totally pissed off at MOI for leaving her so much in the last few months and wouldn't even look at me until last night. THAT was punishment for taking her to the BAby Dr. I am sure -- LOL! Hopefully, having canned food to eat will help my poor kitty put on a bit of weight. She is just toooooo skinny and her backbone and ribs were starting to stick out! I was very upset for a few days and am happy to have the good word on the blood test. Now, let's just hope the heart worm test comes back negative and I'll be very happy, to say the least!!! CiaoMeow >^;;^<

My silly cat finally decided that I am an okay person when I came home, now she is normal cat, into everything. She only weighs about

3lbs tops.

Talking of cats throwing up, I have discovered something. I was gone for most of October and my new cat (who didn't seem to like me too well previously) threw up lots of times - of course on my white bedroom carpet.

The person looking after her didn't want to clean it up because she was scared she would make it worse. As it happened, the cleanup was a breeze. It had dried up so was removable simply picking it up with paper towel. There was very little marking below so I just used the hose on the Spot Bot machine to go over it gently.

There were about six deposits and I would defy anyone to see where they were. She has not been sick since I was back and I think in future I would just lay a piece of paper towel over it and leave it until it dried out. Always before I have cleaned up immediately when found and a mark ensued.

So now, cat people, you know the ugly secret lol

I know someone else who says this works. So all this time when I didn't clean up puke for days I was practising effective stain removal. Who knew? Dora

It was just really good housekeeping, it was instinctively known to you, brilliant !

I find it a bit repugnant to leave it, but that is what I intend to do when it happens. Anything to avoid a stain.

It is 50F right at this moment, 0725, but looks like we will have rain. The temp will climb a bit later. One thing we nearly always have is a reasonable night temperature due to being on the Atlantic. Even in mid-summer the heat will abate just slightly and one can sleep in comfort.

Isn't the weather odd this year? It was 52F when I woke up this morning way at the other end of the coast.

We started at 50F but the forecast was in error, it did not go up, it went down and we had white, slushy snow. I hate it, I bet those two evil women in New England hexed it on me !

You want strange weather?? We just got back from a three day getaway with RV friends in Chiefland FL. This is a bit north of Cedar Key, often mentioned in Hurricane alerts, and 30 miles west of Gainesville. Quite a bit upstate from where we live!

It was COLD! There is another gentleman and I who are known for wearing shorts in all weathers; this time Cal and I wore jeans. In fact I found a flannel lined corduroy jacket in the closet of the RV ( for New England weather), and I was so thankful for it.

It was below freezing every night, had a bitter cold wind from the north, and I don't think the outside temp got above 50! Here in Florida we aren't used to it.

When we got home, I was comfy in shorts, traveling with the sun shining in. The house was so cold (62 in the kitchen, and under 60 the rest of the house) I prevailed upon Jim to give us a little blast of heat.

Even Max and Gretel were snuggled in one bed!

While we were gone it was so nice to wear sweaters which I had knitted eons ago!

I thought I would post an update on Reno (Black Cat). I heard from the Baby Dr. early this week and she said that the heart worm test came back negative. This most likely means what I have suspected; for some unknown reason, Reno can't tolerate any sort of dry cat food. It could just be that she's gotten older and her system has changed enough that she can't digest the dry food and throws it up. I have heard her in the laundry room in the middle of the night eating the cat food and the next morning, there is a pile of cat puke waiting to greet us. She has not once thrown up the canned food and is beginning to feel like she has a tiny bit more meat on her kitty bones. The Dr. and I agreed that I will bring her back in after the holidays to see if she has gained any weight and to have her tummy, etc. checked. I will have to wait for a few weeks after the New Year. I'm sure she won't be eating much while we are gone to Lizard Land and any weight gain she might have achieved could be seriously compromised! A few weeks of having Mom & Dad home and feeding her every few hours should help restore her "fattening up" levels :-). CiaoMeow >^;;^<

Sounds like good news - there are alternatives to dry food. Cat's can be so dedicated to one food but she will come around to another sort and probably will come to like wet food.

I don't get ANY cat food coupons so I would gladly accept yours. The little darlings are not fussy as to brand, just flavours. Thanks for the offer of the coupons. OH, btw, did I ever send you hockey fabric? I do believe I have some leftovers and would be happy to share if you have a use for it. If not, I will send it to the lady who makes the quilts for homeless "babies" who are up for adoption. CiaoMeow >^;;^<

Two of my cats had trouble this summer with vomiting after eating their dry food (aged abt. 5 & 20). We noticed that the vomiting and the hairball deposits have almost completely stopped since we started feeding them a hairball formula dry food (just Wiskas brand).

Cheers,
