Cat Hairs

Does anyone else have trouble with cathairs (not to mention cats) in your layouts? I've about reached the point where if there isn't a cat hair stuck to the page somewhere, it isn't my work. While I'm not (yet) ready to trade them in on a pair of goldfish, many's the time I find myself yelling, "Get out from between me and what I'm doing!" I know I'm not the only person here owned by a cat, so how do you all handle stuff like this?

I have a beagle basset mix, and we have dog hair everywhere, but he does not really come into my scrap room, and if he does it is to lay on the floor under my chair (since he can not get on my bottom shelf anymore). We do have other problems with the dog hair, like you can not sit anywhere in the house and not have it all over you. We actually have a lint brush hanging next to the door for days when we are wearing dark colors.

Well first of all, I TRY NOT to give mine any attention - RIGHT, then I just grumble, get the tweezers out and hurry up and get the LO's in the nice, clean, protective covers -LOL!!!

That's what I was going to suggest... getting some tweezers and keep them in your pen cup. Also I have a cloth for wiping finger prints off of photos which I do before they go into the sheet protector. I wonder if it would also wipe off cat hairs too.

Thanks, Dave and Lynne! I have tried the tweezers, and they are the best way I've found to get hairs out of the way. Like earlier this evening, when I placed a piece of vellum inside a card with the invisible vellum tape, only to find after I'd pressed it down that between the tape and the vellum was a big black cat hair. Grrr... Fortunately, the vellum came back up without tearing, and out came the tweezers. After I took them back from the cat, I was able to remove the hair without destroying the vellum tape. At this point I was forced to remove (several times) the cat from the table. Funny thing is, this particular cat isn't black.

*Sigh* I suppose cat hair is just gonna have to be my signature touch.

I was thinking the same thing... when you're sharing your albums you can just add, "What can I say, I love cats!"

LOL Mel, I have lived with cat hair so long,I rarely notice it. If I see any stuck to my adhesives..I just pull it off. My dear ole cat loves to lie on my work!!! I don't dare leave it out when I am not working on it. I have decided that he feels if I spend so much time and concentration on 'that thing' it must be worth sleeping on! LOL I check all LO for cat hair and remove what I see. Actually, I think it is funny and maybe an embellishment on the pagesI fo of him! ;-o

Be happy, it could be worse....we have a St Bernard, add into that festival of hair the fact it is spring which equals shedding time and well....cats look VERY attractive right now!

My cat doesn't much get in the way when I'm scrapping. As I'm typing this I just noticed a cat hair on the keyboard. lol That hair does have a tendancy to fly around quite a bit. My cat's all black so his hairs really show up. Where'd that lint roller go anyway?

Thanks, I am a wanna be scrapper, I've got everything from laminators to cutters, punchers, albums, papers, *little pretties*, even a large scale printer so it could fit the scrapbooking pages (not often you need to print up to 13x19 otherwise!) you'd faint if you saw my closet....and I have ZERO artistic ability....so the stuff sits there waiting for inspiration, I have

*issues* when going into the scrapbooking store....I buy a ton, bring it home, and into the closet it goes....hoping one day my creative ability will blossom. Hasn't happened yet tho'

So I lurk, and look at all the wonderful albums you all create. Every now and then my kids get creative and make something...usually a card from my stash, but that is about the extent of it.

Thanks for the welcom tho' !

Cheers Jamie

Jamie, Welcome and you are well on your way to being a FLOOZY! LOL I think going to a scrapbook store and not buying something is impossible for us!! If you don't have a scrapbook magazine...well get one quick!! You will see so many things that you just know you can DO THAT ! Once you make LOs you will be hooked for life!

Jamie, once you have that magazine, or look online, or anywhere you find examples of layouts, pick one you like, and copy it with your own photos. This is called scraplifting. It's the best way to learn. And one of the best complements you can pay another scrapper is to scraplift from their layouts. Before you know it, you'll be developing your own ideas and unique style, and then we'll be scraplifting from you! In the meantime, join us! This is a wonderful group for giving support, answering questions, encouraging each other, and above all, enabling! You're not alone in buying tons of supplies and then not using them fast enough. I suspect my kids will inherit way more supplies than they do layouts. (Maybe they will use them up...)

And Welcome Aboard!

Sabrina, I think Jamie has already bypassed flozzy and entered the FLASS zone!

Jamie, if I might make a couple of suggestions of things I do when I am helping new scrappers get started/

TO GET STARTED

  1. Go to your photo stash and select 5-6 pictures of your all time favorite trip. Trips are often the easiest thing to scrap.

  1. Look at the dominant colour. Take your favorite photo out of the 5-6 and take it to your paper stash. Check the photo against the stash. You'll know when the paper is right, because the photo will look brighter and prettier. Grap two sheets of that paper. Don't worry if there is only one.

  2. Go to your stash of cardstock, with the paper and the photo. Hold them both against the different shades of cardstock starting witht he cardstock of the color that dominate the photo and paper. Also try black and white and a cream. To get a better idea of what things will look like together, place the cardstock on the corner of the paper and the picture on a corner of the cardstock as if you were creating a mat. Once you are comfortable with all of take 2 pieces of the cardstock and everything else back to your work table.

  1. Place the 2 sheets of paper face up on the table. Then take your favorite picture and place it towards the top of the sheet on the left side paper. Now place the other 4-5 pictures on your printed papers where they look good. (If they look good to your eye, they are perfect for you and that is all that counts!)

  2. Take a look at your pictures. Is there any dead space. I call dead space areas around the true subject of the picture that take away from rather than add to the beauty of the main subject. If you are unsure take a few small pieces of ordinary paper and hide the part that you would are thinking is extra. Make sure that on one side you put the cardstock you chose as it will enhance the picture and give you a better idea. If you like the effect of getting rid of the extra, go ahead and do that now for each picture and then place them again on the patterned paper.

  1. Now cut the mats so that there is about 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch on each side. You can measure your pictures and add 1/4 or 1/2 to the lenght and width or, you can adhere the picture to the corner of the cardstock with the cardstock showing on the two sides exactly as you want and then cut the other two sides. Just do what is more comfortable for you. You can even turn the cardstock over and draw lines and then follow the lines if that makes you more comfortable. Adhere the pictures to the cardstock and place them again on the patterned paper do not ahdere the matted pictures to the patterned paper yet.

  2. Now go to your stash of embelishments and select those that you think will go well with your layout! Yes you now have an almost completed 2 page layout! Lay them amongst the pictures in a way that is pleasing to your eye! Yes, it is about you and how YOU think it looks. When you have your winning combination, go ahead and adhere everything. Take out your camera or scanner and take a picture to share with us!

  1. Celebrate, you have now crossed over from being merely a scrapbook collector to being both a collector to being a scrapbooker. You can now legitimetly tell your spouse that you need to go and buy more supplies for the layout that you are going to work on!

IF YOU STILL CAN:T GET STARTED!

If you've tried following what is above one step at a time and still can't take that first step, check and see if there is a member of RCS in your area. Invite him or her over to help you with your first layout! Most of us will travel as long as there is at scrapbook store for every hour of travel. Also you might want to check your LSS (local scrapbook store) for a beginner's class. Most stores have at least 2 per month. If you don't have one close by, how about checking places like creativememories.com for a consultant near you and finding out if she has a crop once in a while that you might attend.

Hope this works for you, Jamie, good luck using those supplies!
