Here in Orkney, and particularly on Stronsay (population 400), hardly anyone pays attention to anyone's wealth and/or possessions. It's their behaviour that's important; one of the things that attracted us to move here four years ago.

I like that. There were a few Nouveau Riche at college who thought their wealth and possessions should make them better than the scholarship students (identifiable because if you had a scholarship, you couldn't have a car on campus), and there were a lot of Old Money students who -- as long as you didn't ask them for a handout -- treated the scholarship students as equals.

My grandmother (whose father lost pretty much everything except the large townhouse and the 11 mouths to feed in the war) had seen to it that I had high society manners, and that was a lot of the reason I fit in with people whose last names are instantly recognizable. Maybe I was never going to have a cotillion or society debut, but she made sure I knew how to behave if I was ever invited to one.

A distant cousin (whose grandfather started the business that made her Nouveau Riche with sizeable loans from, among others, my grandparents) was at the same college at the same time (entirely unplanned), and made sure everyone knew I was the Poor Relation. One night when she and her self-important friends snubbed me at dinner, I was summoned over by a couple of the millionaire scions "she shouldn't treat you like that, come eat with us". ROFLMAO, she and her Nouveau Riche crowd had been trying to infiltrate these guys' circle since Day One, unaware that their Nouveau Riche attitude was what made them persona non grata; as one of the guys said, she might have the money, but not the manners.

He was the one who introduced me to the concept of Genteel Poverty: I was far more acceptable to them because I had the manners, if not the money. And although I made the guys laugh, I was never made to feel like the court jester; in their eyes, I was a lady, not a slave.

You people all speak funny, as a kid said to me once.

Indeed they do---as someone from the only place in North America where people don't have an accent (just ask us).

Hmmm - I think it's more "Bawl-murrh"

We're going to the Orioles vs Anaheim game tonight (in fab seats from one of our hockey pals) - so I'll be sure to check out the accent. For whatever reason, DH is an Angels fan, and Donna with her DH is going - they're serious Red Sox fans - and are despite the logic that they should be rooting against another Eastern team - are planning to root for the O's. Should be lots of fun. I think I'll be the one in a CAPS hat!

Enjoy!

Heard the DD and DH were happy at the last call of the Red Sox Yankee game. Both of them talking to the Yankee batters and pitcher the whole 9th inning.
