Way back in January I said

Hi all,

Back in January I told you all that I could finally do appliqué. Well, I am very pleased to say that I have been practising and practising and have done a few smallish things but then decided I would do something for real. As I have a real bad memory, I hope I haven't boasted about this before but here is a pic of my best work so far:

Disco GollyByGolly is for my daughter and will be made into a cushion - was going to use him in a quilt but decided not to.

I copied him from a colouring book, enlarged him, cut out all the pieces, and then appliquéd him.

Hi Polly,

Thanks for that tip. I went and had a look and measured it - 1-1/2 inches top and bottom. The photo must have been cropped by photobucket fortunately.

I have added your advice to my notebook for future reference.

He's just precious. Good for you, Di. Naturally, being a card-carrying worrier, I am concerned that the top of his head may be placed too close to the edge of the orange/gold (can't tell on my monitor) fabric. If he's as close to the edge as it appears, you may have to unstitch some, add a strip of your background, and re-stitch the guy's head back. It's good insurance to always begin appliqué with a place 2 or 3" bigger than you think you'll need. I'm so glad you're enjoyed appliqué. It brings me a lot of pleasure. Polly

Whew. My monitor makes him look like he doesn't have much more than 1/8" clearance - seemed like decapitation was going to happen. Ahhhh. Thanks Di for reporting back. Polly

Oh he's fun Di. Just like the little chap I remember from the marmalade jar! Must have been very satisfying for you to have done this from scratch - no pattern. Good for you. . In message , Maloney Empire writes

If I can learn to do it, please let me assure you that anyone can. I put it off for so many years until 'forced' into it by my sister - now I love it.
