Oh how well I remember the soot and dust in NY. It's much better here, probably partially because we're much too close to a nuclear power plant for comfort, but it is cleaner. We also use central air for most of the year and the windows are closed.
I have cleaning help nowadays and for me, that's the absolute best way to go.
Depends on the brand. Breyers doesn't have anything you wouldn't put in it: their vanilla is evaporated whole milk, cream, sugar, egg yolks, natural vanilla flavour, pure ground vanilla beans.
I'm having luck just simmering spaghetti seasonings along with cooked onion and garlic to low sodium canned tomatoes (particularly I like the fire roasted tomatoes). If I'm low on time, I'll shake in dry minced garlic and onion for the cooked. I'm very fond of the new "healthy" spaghetti noodles now out there (higher fiber, calcium, etc.) although some brands of whole wheat have too strong a taste and texture for me (Barilla Plus and Ronzoni Smart I like).
I just saw frozen Campbell's Green Bean Casserole in our grocery to my surprise. I wouldn't think the creamy sauce and mushrooms would even freeze well.

How homemade I do things depends on how much time I have and who the dish is for. Large groups including coworkers or others I barely know are likely to get storebought things if experience says that's what most people bring. If I'm going to an event where I know everyone is generous with their time and effort with homemade goodies, I try to reciprocate. I hate slaving over something for people who don't appreciate (or bringing pretty serving dishes that "disappear").
If I had bought deviled eggs in store, I probably would have perked up with bacon bits and green onions suspecting storebought = lacks flavor.
I wouldn't mind housework so much if you could get by with enjoying the results longer before someone came along and mussed everything up again. Endless, endless, endless ...
We have a very small organic section in Publix but that's not a familiar name. I'll look again next time I'm there. I don't know if you care but there is a quick cook Stove Top Chicken Stuffing that's low sodium and it's not too terrible if you add a little sauteed onion and a few shakes of a spice or herb.
I have just finished making little mini-muffins from scratch (made the muffins before work, and decorated them after I got home), so I'm absolutely in the group of people who like to cook. Funnily enough though, although I *do* do it, I'm not all that keen on making dinner for just one, which of course I have to do if I want to eat!
Prey tell, what are they? It sounds slightly ominous!
Thanks, but I'm going to look for it in some of the specialty shops here. They only have one place listed and that's too far to drive for a jar of sauce.
I think since the public is clamoring for healthier items, and prices are going up so drastically, more and more low salt and low fat items will become available.
Most people don`t have to calculate their own TIME costs into cooking ,,,, Bought Devilled eggs ???? can you REALLY buy them Cheaper than cooking them yourself at home from scratch ??? mirjam
The freezers in our local shops (both of them) contain some amazing items such as mushy peas, cut cabbage & toad in the hole. I think it would be quicker to make these from fresh rather than go through the rigmarole of defrosting
