Printed cross stitch

Do they use sharps for working printed cross stitch?

I would say yes. You need a sharp point to get through the solid fabric.

An embroidery needle (aka crewel needle) is the needle you will want for embroidering designs stamped on fabric. A "sharp" needle of the same size will only accommodate one strand of floss. Crewel/embroidery needles have an oval eye that will accommodate more strands of floss, and also have a sharp point to penetrate closely woven fabrics.

You will probably want a size 5, 7, or 8 needle.
