You can get very thin elastic on a card to hold with your sock yarn as you knit the top inch's worth of of ribbing. If you hold the elastic loosely, it will be enough to "grab" where it needs to stay on your leg, yet be soft enough not to bind and cut off circulation.

If you're lucky, you'll be able to find the knit-in elastic that comes in colors and get one that best matches your sock yarn. Not a whole lot of colors are available, but being able to find brown to go on a brownish sock rather than just using white or black makes everything look much neater.
