REALLY Christmas Projects

Okay, I'll grab the thread...

This year's Christmas ornament (for a dear friend, she's received either an ornament or a large stitched Santa Claus for 14 years! She's the only one who really appreciates them!) -- it's a Santa Claus in the round, there are a few gingerbread men (Fred & Ginger), some metallic threads & the beard/hair is done with whisper. It's all done except for the whisper.

My LONG-TERM Christmas-y project = Rocky Mountain Christmas done on needlepoint canvas. I'm not sure, but I think I started it sometime in

2004. I only have one section (out of six) left to finish and then the backstitching.

Those are the only Christmas projects that I can think of.

Oh yeah! I"m working on a DNA cable scarf (made from ecru yarn that used to be a sweater I crocheted -- didn't check the gauge, the darned thing was too small for me or any of my nieces!) -- scarf is for Dear Niece who's studying animal science w/ an eye towards either vet school or graduate school...

My longest term Christmas project has been Christmas stocking for my two sons'. My oldest was born 9 days before Christmas. I did stockings with their names on the cuff and below on the stocking I tell something important about what happened for them that year. Then a Christmas band. I was able to get nine years on each of their stockings. Oldest DS then asked if I was going to do another stocking for him. NO WAY, I could not even find the stockings again when #2 son was born. (I had to have my then LNS make one for me using #1 son's as a pattern.) So we moved on to bell pulls. They each now have two bell pulls to go with their stockings. The really neat thing is that for all the lettering for each year I use alphabets designed by the guy's Grandfather. So the have something from him as well as the stockings and bell pulls from me.

My oldest son enjoys seeing the embroidery and has put his name on most everything I have stitched as being his. The only thing youngest son has been excited about was his bell pull two years ago when he completed Airborne School and I used Gloriana Forest for the lettering since it had a camo look and I put two Airborne wings on the bell pull. He really liked that!

Funny you should bring this up!

I was just thinking it was time to pull out "Santa's Magic" from Mirabilia again.

He's slow going, lots of metallics, wisper and beads, so I tend to work on him in Nov-Dec each year then put him away again once the Xmas spirit goes away!

Boy can I agree with that. That's sort of how Rocky Mountain Christmas is for me. I'm just not as "jazzed" about some projects depending on the seasons -- you might think that would make FP more of a summer project, but it's so large that I can't stand to have if hanging on me in the summer

EG P.S. Just finished rooting through the craft closet -- got out some tatting stuff (still not too good at that, either needle or shuttle tatting), the matls for a colorful sweater (all planned in my head, just not sure of execution), and the matls for either a sweater or a poncho made from Lion Brand chunky yarn (not made by company anymore?)

Tatted Xmas ornies would be a good gift idea for my office mates.....hmmmm....

I get most of the work done on Silver Lining's Broadway (a yellow and red rose) in Feb. I need the bright vivid colors during that far too grey and dreary month.

Happy Dancing over a bunch of finishes...

I had stitched up the fronts to several ornaments over the past year, and last weekend went away with a bunch of girlfriends so I brought all the pieces to "assemble" them into ornaments. In two days I finished assembling all FIVE ornaments while we gabbed! Not necessarily all Christmas-y, mind you. A little pelican (from a kit) for DD, who loves 'em; a tulip for me (from a cross stitch mag) to hang in the dining room next spring; a moose (from Prairie Schooler) for a neighbor who finally saw his first moose while camping in Canada this past summer, to commemmorate the event; the Blackbird design from last year's JCS ornie issue; and a little country-style "bookstore" house from a JCS magazine series about 2 yrs. ago. It was a productive weekend!

I'm within one color of finishing MarBek's "Christmas Angel". Had hoped to start the companion piece (Star Angel) this weekend, but have had a sudden influx of work.

Monday, we start a death penalty trial, where they get each day's transcript at the start of the next day, so there will be a lot of late nights and precious little stitching the rest of this year. The money is good, though.

At the risk of sounding like a grinch, I'm not doing any Christmas ornaments this year, except for a few small beaded ornaments to throw into cards. And I'm buying all my gifts too. The last few years I've just about driven myself nuts making gifts for all the kids in the family and I'm putting an end to it now, before the grand nephews and neices get old enough to expect it. Their parents are getting a card and that's it.

That means I'll have to get all my cards out in time tho ... Now as for things for myself, that's different. I've got a WIP/UFO I've had for years which is just about done. Most of what is left to be done is the backstitching. I'll probably do a couple more beaded ornaments. Next on my wanna do list of the xmas persuasion is a moose ornament from Stoney Creek, and a nutcracker table runner.

I don't think it's Grinch-y at all. I've stopped making gifts except for the single ornament for S. If anyone else gets a hand-made gift, it's because I just wanted to stitch something and happened to think -- oh good gift when it was done.

LOL, if you pull out Santa's Magic, then I'll pull out my snowman that is

95% done - but I put him away when I realized I'd have to redo some of the white. But, all the colored silks, everything all done. Just needs some beading, and re-doing of the body white.

She must've designed that about the same time as the Snowman.

Hmmm - real projects - must finish the faux fur scarf/wraps for the crazy SILs & niece. Started them 3 years ago. Lovely fur, with nice silk or rayon chaliis type fabric for reverse side.

Annual revisit to DH's Xmas stocking - NP from Tapestry Tent - Arctic Santa

- pulled all the threads, etc - have to finish selecting some and finally mount it on the 20" rods for my stand. Have to do this on the stand, and, well, it's in a box somewhere. So, I guess that next week I should dig it out. How fast can I stitch a big NP piece? Hmmm - there's a hope - I might be able to do it by Xmas. Nahh - well, maybe.

That's enough. Any more makes me depressed.

How much coffee you got? How strong is it?

Wow - congrats to you. Kind of motivating. DH is off to ref tonight, so, I'm about to finish catching up on RCTN and then go finish the dang Summer Garden.

Plenty of coffee, and I don't sleep much. And, the old espresso machine is working (good one is still packed away somewhere). Plus, we've established that DH actually slept through my Bernina running when it was in the bedroom. And, I've got a new daylight kind of lamp on my nightstand - which has let me stitch or knit sitting crosslegged up in the bed. Of course, Puckster feels compelled to get in there and inspect, but....

Sadly, the big stocking - which is gorgeous - I have to do on a stand. It's too big for my lap stand, I think. Although - I could put shorter side bars on the scroll rods, and see if it works.

Ellice - wondering if she should challenge herself in this idiotic way

Go for it! How do we know what we are capable of if we don't challenge ourselves to do the impossible?

*sigh* My Impossible Du Jour is finding the other girl's birthday scarf. I suspect someone batted the ball of yarn under the couch.

Starting a new one is easier than moving the couch.

Now gotta get 'em both done by the first girl's birthday so I can send both packages at once and tell them "pick one" so they have only themselves to blame if they like their sister's better, since they are NOT identical.
