repairing small holes in canopy

Hi, I have small holes, really tears, mostly at the point where the umbrella canopy attaches to the ribs. (These are old umbrellas.) At that point there's a lot of tension on the fabric. The problem I'm having is that after mending the tear it pulls through the fabric, when I open the umbrella. Is there something I can use, or some way of fortifying the edge of the fabric so that the mend doesn't pull through it? Thanks, John

Hi, John! Warm greetings for the season!

What you are experiencing is more than likely rot. I just went through this with an old pillow case. I mended it zig-zag on the sewing machine. After washing, it tore out beyond the mend.

There's nothing you can do because even a patch won't hold. The fabric won't take it anymore. I used patches on one of my husbands shirt sleeves with the same results. He misses his shirt!

That is my experience. Others may have other suggestions.

Maybe small bits of duck tape applied on the underside of the fabric would work.

The only thing I can think of is using a very narrow, matching bias tape under the two edges. Other than that, I simply don't have a clue. I understand what you're trying to do, but I still think that the material just won't take the pressure anymore, even if there isn't full-blown rot. These pillow covers I was speaking about are actually covers for down pillows over which you put a normal pillow case. You can't poke holes anywhere else in the fabric, just these edges.

Dianne - wish you all the best.

If there's one thing I always try to remind myself of, it's this: failures inevitably lead to discoveries. Your exercise was not for naught.

Happy holidays! I think your hobby is an interesting one. The other day I ran across crochet patterns for umbrellas and thought of you.

LOL! I shouldn`t think they be much use in a rain-storm!
