Ribbon embroidery

Moving up on my to do list is starting some ribbon embroidery projects. My favorite magazines, Classic Stitches and Inspiration, have several designs that I want to try. I've also accumulated several books, including Di van Niekerk's Ribbon Embroidery and Stumpwork. Despite having not done any ribbon work, the featured project is calling to me. I don't intend to order a kit or fibers from South Africa and will not use icky bucilla ribbons. Can someone suggest other brands and places to get them?

Nordic Needle has some ribbon, although I haven't looked at their stock recently. Last time I was on the site they'd cut down on the stock. The Japanese brands are generally good, although if you want varigated ribbon - very nice for large flowers - look at the hand dyed. I've ordered the hand dyed a few times.

What kind of designs do you do on saris etc. with ribbon embroidery? The sari embroidery I've seen here (Canada) is mostly running stitch, satin stitch, couching and some button holing in thread and metallics. I haven't actually seen much ribbon embroidery.

Most of the ribbon embroidery I've seen here tends towards floral designs. I don't tend to associate that with middle asian embroidery. Dora

Thanks for the links which I've bookmarked. Can't remember which site had a tool that was a punch needle for ribbons. Has anyone done this type of work? Might a regular 6 strand needle work with narrow ribbon?

Since typing at you, life has gotten in the way Instead of the absolutely, drop dead gorgeous piece featuring South African flora and fauna, I'll do one or two smaller ribbon designs for which I have appropriate or almost appropriate colored fibers.

Use a chenille needle with an eye that comfortably fits the size ribbon and that will give you a needle large enough to accomodate the ribbon as it passes through the fabric.

Use short lengths of ribbon as it can't take a lot of in/out.

Does crazy patch intrigue you? I have only seen a few pieces that stirred me.

You can also try Gloriana Ribbons. Anne is now dying ribbons 7mm wide and wider. They are really wonderful to work with. They are over-dyed. I am not sure who has all the colors in stock but you could ask the ladies at

I'm 97.5% certain that one of the sites I visited had a section on ribbons in punch needles. Naturally, I can't find it now.

Yes but I haven't seen much of it in person.

I did a quick Google search and did discover that punch needle embroidery is being done with 2mm silk ribbon. How interesting. Didn't see any pictures, but I didn't look all that hard.

You might want to jaunt on over to

Thanks, Bobbie. It's nice to know I wasn't hallucinating. Ribbon embroidery has once again moved to the back burner. I'm heading to NJ on Monday to possibly say good bye to my 92 year old father.

Hugs to you Anne! Three weeks ago, I was on that journey to my DM. Turns out the stroke was a light one and she got a reprieve. May you share the same experience.

Hugs to you Anne. My Grandmother is 93 years old and slowly fading. Up to about a couple of months ago she was still knitting and making prayer shawls and neo-natal blankets. She is living in my parents home across the street from me so I see her often. Her hearing and short term memory have suffered, but she still does the cross word puzzle in the paper every day and works on a jigsaw puzzle. I hope that your father will be comforted knowing you are nearby. Love Bobbie V.
