small beaded purses - good book?

My mom's birthday is fast approaching (Apr. 2) and she is interested in those small _knitted_, beaded purses (possibly amulet bags) Does anyone have a particular book to recommend which she could get started with or a good kit for a beginner? TIA, Jeanine in Canada

Unfortunately the book I'm recommending doesn't have any knitted purses. Most of the amulet purse patterns use needleweaving; i.e. peyote, brick or netting. Anyway, Enid Taylor's book, Decorative Beaded Purses, is actually quite good for beginners. It gives detailed instructions on individual stitches and techniques.

I've got one website with a free pattern for a knitted purse,

you go to the bottom and use the link to the provider's website, shehas a list of books on one of the pages of her website that she saysare quite good. I don't know if any of them have information aboutknitted amulet purses. You might also try about.com (I know, popups are yucky!) I have a 1902 pattern for a crocheted purse I printed out from there:

They have kits and books. Can't say I've tried any of it, but it looks good. I'm going back to read their bead knitting discussion.

Nordic Needle is an excellent choice.

If you feel inclined to look further (or if anyone else is looking for information), there is an excellent article on knitted purses written in 1989 for Threads magazine by Alice Korach, who later went on to be the founding editor of Bead & Button magazine. The issue is Aug/Sept

1989 No. 24, p. 24-29.

According to this article, if you want to do pictoral style purses, you can use any cross stitch pattern to do so. The trick is stringing your beads on in order of use without error. Hard to do without driving oneself batty I gather.

The classic reference for bead knitting, that I came across in several places, was Mary Thomas's Knitting Book. This might be OP but I've heard it referred to before so maybe not.

A full sized classic beaded knitted purse has been on my 'want' list for a long time, but I've never got around to it. There's only so much time, you know. Dora in Calgary

If I'm not mistaken, I saw Mary Thomas' book at Chapters this afternoon. I never picked it up as it didn't say anything about beading on the cover. (I was doing a quick glance - it's spring break and Chapters was like being on a school field at recess!)

Hmmm. I wonder if years of helping the kids make pony bead designs would help with figuring this out? ;-)

Thanks for the help! Jeanine in Canada (okay, BC)

afternoon.

I gather she covers "plaited knitting" which can be used in beaded knitting, which is not a common topic, even in knitting books. Dora

Hi Jeanine,

How about trying

? They are in Victoria, B.C., Canada and have a wonderful selection of beaded purse kits. The purses are useful sizes, and many are knit with #3 cotton and #8 beads.

I knit both Jane and the card case that goes with it...wonderfully easy and fun to knit :)

take care, Linda :) (not associated with the company, just a satisfied customer)
