Suggesions welcome

(Hope this isn't a rerun!)

I've gotten out the tropical themed hand painted canvas I got for Christmas and put it on stretcher bars to stare and start thinking about. I've decided I'm going to do a bargello type stitch for the background on each picture - horizontal for the fish and turtle, vertical for the palm tree. And probably brick or Nabuko on the fish. But I'm looking for ideas for the rest.

The place where I got this doesn't do much besides tent stitch - at least 90% of their shop models (including this) were all tent/ basketweave.

Oh, and I guess you need to see it!

I did one years ago with horizontal bargello for a background and each fish was a combo of satin and either vertical or horizontal stitches. I wish I knew where I put my camera so I could show it to you, but I have no clue where it is.

I'd consider doing some fishbone or fern-type stitch in the palm fronds. Even mosaics on the fish to get the scale effect. Something coached for the turtle markings. You could do cashmere that has the tents surrounding it - darn, I've forgotten what it's called - but was one of the motifs in Twister. I'll send some more.

IIRC, David McGaskill has a stitch on the ANG SOM that is great for water.

Very cute piece. I'll churn up some more ideas. Of course, it also has to do with what threads you're using....

Ellice beat me to it -- cashmere or a slanted gobelin over several threads might also be nice instead of dull tent or basketweave. You could add even more interest if you used specialty threads like ribbon floss or varigated, multi- colored thingies

Thanks - that's another Laura Perin piece and one of my favorites too.

HMMM -- isn't there a stitch that ends up looking like a pineapple? Something like that would look neat with the palm tree. Maybe some sort of shell or fan stitch with the fish? I *really* need to get my stitch dictionary out and find names for this stuff. I sitting here looking at the two pillows I did as my final exam for my Dec. Fabrics class and I can't for the loife of me remember what the different stitches are called!!! CiaoMeow >^;;^<
