Talk about Stupid

Somehow, I missed this story. Want to share it again?

I wish she lived on his floor and told him to call an ambulance.

Just think, when it heals you will have a stitching scar to brag about, plus the fact you didn't bleed on the piece itself. But ouch that must have hurt. Hope it is feeling better.

Yikes - what I've missed while not having time to drop in here! Hopefully, you're recovered.

In the meantime - to my fellow needleworkers - in particular those who do canvas work - get ye some locking clamps - like hemostats (they make them with shorter handles for needlework). Or you can be "used" surgical ones. I have some (taken from my DA the surgeon) and use them all the time - they lock on the needle, and tug thru - saving thumbs, lips, and teeth.

I hope you're doing well after this little event!

OK - I'll tell my stupid injury thing. When I was young, slim, and a tennis player (seriously) - I was watching some match (having just finished) and hopped up onto a picnic table that was between courts. Ouch - what the heck? My partner (yup, mixed doubles) looks - and says "I think you got a splinter in your tush!" I grab one of the girls - who looks and says we better go to the locker room. Indeed, I have a splinter right up my rear thigh- exactly where you bend - below the tush, and at top edge of hamstring

- a bit protruding. Just below my tennis panties (this in the day when we had to wear dresses/skirts). So, the locker room crew tries to get it - no luck, and...I'm leaking a bit of blood. Someone gets my mom - cause I'm kind of limping - and we end up going home (fortunately I'm done for the day in this tourney). Great. Then my dad comes home and decides he can try with tweezers, and me laying face down on bed (mom not doing it). After some screaming, and my DM stopping him - as he thought he'd just cut it out...DM calls DA (her sister the surgeon) who says "just meet me at the ER and I'll take care of it." Now, we're going to the Dolphins game that evening, so I shower, get dressed - squishing into my stylish, low-cut, hip-hugger pale yellow jeans (hey - I was almost 14 then and in 10th grade). We go to the ER at Mt Sinai. My DA finally has some gorgeous resident come get me, and takes me to a room. Whereupon she actually has to make an incision, removes a no exaggeration over 3" long redwood splinter, plus a

2nd piece about 3/4" that had broken off (probably from my dad's manipulations), and I end up with a tetanus shot, 3 or 4 stitches, and a humongous bandage swathed all across that one cheek/upper thigh. I think she did it on purpose (supposedly for cushioning). And then I had to somewhow slink my yellow hip-huggers over this mess. And go to the football game- sitting gingerly on half my bottom! Plus, while I was trying to be cute, and flirt with the young resident - my DA quashed it all by telling him I was turning 14 soon! Honestly - I was working on meeting up at the beach with a group... So what if they were in their twenties. Perhaps that had something to do with the embarassing bandage job. She did put the splinters in a vial to show my dad - who still was moaning - but this convinced him that we did the right thing. And then, I had to be excused from phys ed for a week! All from a splinter. I have friends that more than 30 years later still give me grief about this!

I think this is really common - with both people who sew a lot, and those who don't sew much and don't pay attention. I feel lucky that I haven't done this - though I did get a big scratch on my face when a needle broke while sewing and the loose part flew up. I was lucky not to have it hit my eye. Usually I just stop as it's plunging into my fingernail - and just end up with a bruise. So, now, if I'm doing something with a really close seam

- I use a stiletto to keep the fabric under the foot & guided - trying to avoid the needle thru finger thing.

I'm fine from that little disaster, but I've been my own worst enemy for the past couple of weeks and discovered that I'm unbreakable and I have to slow down. Unfortunately, I don't know how to do that.
