Walmart and Anchor

Thank you Jim & Dianne for the clarification !!

I'll second that it is indeed Anchor - and this time in the west of Canada - Alberta.

Just last weekend, I stopped in a Walmart here in Arkansas. They carried Anchor 8 meter floss for $0.21 per skein. It was not on a bobbin, though.

We loved Bolsover castle when welast visited, many years ago mow. At that time they were restoring it - what is it like now? I particularly remember the indoor riding school.

We called them "silks" when I was a child, too, by the way. Now, with such a vast range of materials, it just confuses!!!

Also "by the way" - are you watching Jane Eyre? It was filmed at my most favourite stately home of all - Haddon Hall. We really fell for this beautiful place and love it even more than Hardwick and even the more famous and ostentatious Chatsworth. I`d so love to go back to see them all, but I doubt if I could walk round them now - they`re all huge!

Yes it has been done up. I have not been in it for a few years. The National Heritage have it now and it costs an arm to get in. They have a visitor's centre and a cafe just inside the grounds.

It is open free one day a year usually in November when the Christmas market and lantern parade is on.

Whew! Our Anchor is at least 60 pence a skein (I think it was 62p last time I looked), and a penny or two dearer than DMC anyway. It frightened me to death when I worked out how much my complete range of Anchor and DMC are worth! I have three or four of each of the colours I use most, too.

Pat, On the Tandem Cottage website they are selling Anchor Six Stranded Embroidery Cotton at 40p per skein or

50 Skeins of your colour choice £19.75 100 Skeins of your colour choice £39.00 (all excluding spacedyed threads 1305-1355)

Or am I confusing silk, cotton, floss, thread, etc again?

It`s not surprising if you are, Bruce. Our six stranded embroidery cotton is the same as the American "floss" and what we, as children, used to call "silks"!!! Clear as mud? Still, at least Tandem Cottage can save you quite a bit of money.

Orders over £17 from Tandem Cottage are post free, too, so it pays to stock up. I keep a list of threads I run out of until it gets up to that amount. I only use my LNS for emergencies now, as apart from the price, since it changed hands and widened the range of crafts they`re not so good at keeping the Anchor and DMC racks fully stocked.

Another excellent om;ine supplier is SewandSo

who provide a really fast next day service. Although their prices ARE low they`re not as low as Tandem Cottage. Worth noting, all the same - particularly if they save you three hours on a ferry! Both of the above keep a really wide range of most of the popular fabrics and accesories - much wider than do most LNSs!

My local Wal-Mart here in West Central Georgia, USA did the same thing. I totally missed the clearance though (frown). They are ONLY stocking 58 colors of Anchor AND they shrunk their embroidery section down from 8 feet to 5 feet. The only have 2 sizes of only white only 14 count Aida and darn little else! The floss is 21 cents a skein where the DMC was 24 cents.

They did expand their yarn section. AND a Hobby Lobby is going in only 20 miles away (Happy Dance).

Wal-Marts 20 miles and 35 miles away still have the old set up with DMC and knew nothing of the change when I asked them.

Coats & Clark do own the company here in America and they make the Anchor floss. Used to Anchor was more expensive but now it is cheaper than DMC.

I work part time on an as needed basis in a LNS and that is true on a wholesale level. However, many shops can and do charge more for the Anchor because it is harder for the consumer to find. Michael's, JoAnnes, and Hobby Lobby all carry DMC. I am fortunate that I can get my floss though my friend's shop if I want to but it is 135 miles away in Helen, GA (they do mail order, too). I stay there when I work and don't commute daily :) The shop has all the DMC and they are building there stock of cotton Anchor. They do have the rayon Merlitt Anchor.

Many Blessings to you and yours,

Naomah
