What a decade (or so) can do

I've pulled TW's "The Castle" out of the bin as a project to make for someone who is really helping through a rough patch. I bought the chart, fibers, and fabric more than ten years ago--maybe even more than fifteen. The original piece of fabric was 14 ct. Aida since that is what was recommended on the chart. Now that I know better, I've swapped that out for 28 ct. linen. Good thing since I went by the finished design size on the chart when selecting the Aida and it wouldn't have left me enough room for finishing! I've also pulled up and printed the errata page and scanned in the chart so I can enlarge and print working copies of sections as needed. This is the old hand-drawn chart so doesn't copy as well as I might like. I have my Pako organizer and tons of needles. I probably need to get more highlighters to mark off finished stitches though. My recent latch hook projects have seriously depleted my supply!

Here's my questions: Are there other issues I need to consider before starting this project? Are multiple skeins required of any colors? Has anyone tried adding metallics to this? If so, what colors and where? And just think...way back when I would have been completely on my own with this!

This question takes me back - it's the first big pattern I ever did. It's where I came with the idea of gridding the fabric all on my own, and then discovered later that others did the same thing, it's also where I first worked with Krienik's blending filament, and where I learned how to change the colors on a pattern.

So, here's my changes:

I changed out her more muted colors on the dragon for purer tones, and used blending filaments on various parts - most notably the tail and the castle. I also worked the main tower so that it looks like it has a walk-way around it (just don't fill in the lights for the two outside windows and rework the back-stitching)

Symbol Color 1 907, 3348 parrot green, hunter green 2 906, 3347 3 904, 3346 4 895, 3345 antique blue, blue 6 775, 827 7 932, 813 8 931, 826 9 930, 824 r 315 s 3041 script L 223 n 780 x 783 \ 725 - 726 v 3078, 3348

Kreinik blending filament: - I did not put the white spot in the eye, but used blue blending filament to make it glisten

- I added beige and confetti gold to the stone of the castle to give it a look of light glinting off crystals.

- I added colors to match the colors in the end and tip of the tail, making the tail near the water look wet.

I believe this was the first Teresa Wentzler I actually stitched - and finished and framed! However, since it was done such a while back I did stitch it on Aida - a grey pewter color but still it was Aida. I'm sure it would look better on linen but oh well. I added metallic blending filament to every part of the dragon and the water. I left the castle, rock and trees alone as I figured it would make the shiny parts stand out. I basically just added a blending filament close to the color I was stitching in - and I used a lot of the pearlescent one (#002?). Despite the Aida it looks quite nice and I had it matted with several corresponding muted colors - green, lavender and a gold and it turned out quite nice!

One of these days I might finish the English Cottage sampler that's about 3/4 done and work on one of the other 10 or so TW designs :)

I'm so impressed you are working on it again - you should be proud! MelissaD

Three toes dragons are Japanese, four toed dragons are Indonesian or Korean, Chinese dragons have five toes!
