Project of a lifetime

Here's the project of a lifetime. For a long time now I've been looking for 'just the right chart' for my family tree. So far my tree has nearly 150 members and is still growing.

I also have the basic white walls, in the living room with one wood panelling 'fireplace wall' and I'm looking at wallpaper. Suddenly a brilliant 'project of a lifetime' jumped into my brain. I'm going to chart my own family tree to cover the fireplace wall and incorporate as many different types of stitches as I can! I should cover the wall with fabric, then stitch each family member on a separate piece of Aida, Irish Linen etc. and stitch the family member to the wall fabric separately....Yes that the way to do it. Don't mind me. I often think out loud.:)) Anybody else ever attempted anything like this?

One of Mom's cousins covered the Rec Room wall with white paper and drew the family tree on it. It was a big enough wall that she could add plenty more branches as she researched more cousins.

Ooooh, the genealogist in me loves your idea, but the stitcher thinks you're nuts to do something so big!

I did a family tree for my parents for their 30th last year. Here's a photo:

That's funny Addie. That's exactly what the stitcher and genealogist in ME are saying too! lol. This is why I was calling it the project of a lifetime. :)) It's probably going to take me my whole lifetime to get it finished!

Sorry to reply twice to same post, but I hit the 'send' key by accident when I went to start my next line and say what beautiful work you do Addie! That is VERY impressive!

I was just thinking the same thing as John! What if you move Maureen? And how on earth would this family heirloom be passed down? Great idea, needs tweaking. Maybe attach all you individual pieces to a backing of some sort, which you can then hang like a tapestry? Then its portable. And passable. LOL!

That's beautiful. Can you give us the name and designer. I may have to buy it. I recently "designed" my own "family tree"--a band sampler with my name, my parents and grandparents, children and grandchildren. I was pleased with the way it turned out.

It is from Stoney Creek's Family Blessings (Book 239).

Thank you all for your kind words. It took me about 4 months to do working pretty non-stop. There are blended threads and blending filament (yuk!!) in it that drove me nuts. There's also a ton of different greens that made things difficult to keep track of. I always said that if I were to do it again I would use a variegated thread. For my sister and I, I added our husband's names to fill some space. i thought about grandchildren , but I knew I wasn't done providing somea nd it turned out my sister wasn't either!!

I did replace the original quote, "Our family bond with hearts entwined stands strong as the oak tree through all time; By grace of god when faith endures, our circle of love will be complete when in heaven we all shall meet" with "A man can't make a place for himself in the sun if he keeps taking refuge under the family tree ~ Helen Keller". It seemed far more appropriate for OUR family! The acorns at the bottom could be some of my relatives!!
