Winter Sampler and using Watercolors by Caron

I am wondering what would be the best way to do the border with the "Emerald" Watercolors so I get the most variegated effect. Do I stitch all the way up one side and down the other? Will that effect how it looks at the crossing junctures? Here is a photo of the design:

Yes, it makes sense. I thought my question wouldn't make any sense! I decided to play around and it's actually the way I did it. I'm also interested in knowing what this "Santa" beard is. I see reference to a "Santa," but I don't see one in this design. Any idea what the directions could be talking about.

Yeah, it's not the way it's done in the model, but I just like it better that way, for whatever reason.

Is it just the name of the fiber?

It's great to experiment with variegated thread. Making each whole cross as you go will give the strongest variegated look. Doing a row of half stitches and then going back will give a different look. If it's a variegated floss and you're using two strands, try reversing one of the strands and that will give a nice subtle effect.

I never heard of Santa's Beard fiber. Where do I get it?

Thanks

one day while surfing the net and it looks like a great way to see how different stitching patterns affect the look of the final product. NAYY.

In the Materials List on the link you gave, "Santa's Beard" is listed as the name for Rainbow Gallery SB1. I'm wondering if that's the reference, rather than to a particular motif on the sampler.

Yes, I agree it's a fiber and I actually didn't see it listed. This is the first piece I've done with so many specialty fibers. Now that you point it out I can see I still need more materials!
