birthing and tying quilts

I have a quilt I'd like to birth and tie, but I have never birthed or tied a quilt before so I have a few questions. First is how do you handle batting while birthing a quilt? And has anyone here tied a quilt with embroidery floss. I think it would give the quilt a neat look, but didn't know how it would look or hold up after time. Any good ways to estimate how much floss it will take before I get to the store?

If anyone has any other little hints for tying or birthing they would also be greatly appreciated.

TIA!

I don't know nothin' 'bout birthin' no quilt!!!

What do you mean by "birthing" a quilt?? In my pea brain I would think it means designing something, but I have a feeling that isn't what you mean. So now I have a new quilt thing to learn .... *sitting down at your feet*

Here's how to birth: lay the batting out. On top of the batting, put the backing Right Side up. On top of that, put the quilt top Right Side down. You have to have a way to turn it - so - on any edge, make an "X" with straight pins. Move down the edge about a foot and make another "X". The "Xs" will tell you stop here, start here and don't sew between the "Xs". Pin the edges (sides, top and bottom) about every 6 inches. You don't have to get carried away with measuring - about a hand width or length will do. Stitch from one X around the quilt and back to the other X. Trim seams, clip corners. Turn. (er, ummm, birth). Try to push the corners out sharp and flat but be gentle. Then, I pin the edges flat and stitch around again. You'll want to turn under the place you used to turn through. There's a stitch on my SM that makes a scallop sort of arc and one that looks rather like a lightening bolt. Something like these looks nice, will hold the edges nicely and don't require tedious precision. How did we do? Got it? Polly

I'm thinking of trying this on a baby quilt I want to make.

Do you have the batting top and backing all the same sizes?

Can I quilt the quilt once it's been 'birthed'?

Thanks

I think the answer to your first question is 'yes'. The answer to your second is definitely yes!! I'm no expert on this, but thought I had better reply, as there were no others! There will probably be loads by the time I get back here again >g<

I just 'birthed' a baby quilt. It is a first for me (the birthing). It went really well. I laid it all out on the big table, made sure the layers really were in the right order, re-laid it out, sewed the layers together, leaving a 12" gap in the middle of one side, clipped, turned and pressed. It worked really well! I am in the process now of going around the edges before I quilt the middle. So far, so good. The top is regular cotton and the back is medium heavy flannel and the batt is single layer of warm and white needled cotton.

Thanks for replying.

Do I still need to baste the quilt after it's been birthed and before quilting?

Thanks

Susan
