Anyone use a York Kick Wheel?

Hubby and I are driving with the kids down to Florida in February for a holiday and I have always wanted a York Kick Wheel. Since Axner is in Florida I figured I'd bring one back with me. The problem is that I am a part time potter who has not done too much potting lately and hubby is unconvinced I will even use this wheel. I do historical re-enactments and would like to have a wheel to do demos on at different sites. I figured the York was just right for this. I have wanted one for years.

Since I've never seen one up close and personal, my questions are............ Has anyone out there ever used a York Kick Wheel and what did/do you think of it? It is hard to get used to? How many bats did you order to go with it? Is it really as portable as it sounds?

ANY information you could send my way would be a bonus. I already know that I will not be throwing more then a few pounds on it and that's fine, I don't do big stuff anyway.

Thanks in advance,

Sometimes we just need to remember what the rules of life really are... You need only two tools: WD-40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the duct tape.

Hi Penni, I don't have a York kick wheel specifically, but I have been using a kick wheel for a few years now. I like the kickwheel more than the electric and recently found the electirc quite hard to go back to. It goes too fast. As far as portability goes, I don't concider mine very portable at all. Mine has a very light wooden frame, but it also has a 150 to 200 lb concrete fly wheel! It took 2 of us to carry it down to our basement.

The historical re-enactment stuff sounds interesting to me though. I live in Ottawa, can you tell me more about how you mix pottery and re-enactment?
