Crackle glazes? in layers?

Neophyte here!

I want to put a nice crackle glaze on some white earthenware bisque. The ware is SO white I thought I would simplify matters and just put in on the ware with no other colors. Checking around though it looks like most people are doing crackle in layers. Such as a layer of clear and a layer of crackle. By and large should I put the layer of crackle on first then another layer of clear noncrackle?, or the other way around? And can I just use a micro amount of oxides or mason stains in either the crackle or clear coat to give a subtle color? Thank you for any info..

What are you going to use your pieces for? If they are not functional then you don't need two glazes. Read the thread in here on how to fill in cracks in glaze. Until recently I had never heard of glazing over or under a crackle glaze.

Put one nice thick coat on, fire the item, rub any stain you like into it, then re bisque
