Extruders

I also saw this extruder posted. My concern is that it may not hold the same quantity of clay that one of the more established "commercial" companies extruders would (meaning one has to stop, refill, go back to work, etc. My other concern (I couldn't see the pictures very well) is that the handle appears to be "tubular" and might bend under the force required to push somewhat drier clay through the die.

It might be just the thing for a beginner, and insufficient for say, a production studio.

And then, there is always that thought in the back of my mind that says "Why aren't they just setting a price for it, and sticking with it?"

A Google search of "Crackpots Pottery Studio" reveals only an exhibit currently going on in Longmont Texas. Nothing about a manufacturing facility. Of course, I could just be paranoid, and it's a fineUSA-made product.

The solution to your problem lies in your posting. Daryl Baird's "Extruder Book", published by the American Ceramic Society, has instructions on making one. Yes, the parts are cheap. The assembly requires some ability, and a few hours of work. Get the book, buy the parts, have the character with the experience do the cutting, drilling, and assembling.
