Hi everyone, If glaze recipes are formulated by grams why are the chemicals sold by the pound? Sandi
Same logic as Tuna Fish sold in Ounces and Total Fat listed in Grams. Just to drive us crazy.
Life is easier here in Europe, at least on the continent. Glazes and tuna fish are in grams, dekagrams, kilograms...

Glaze recipes are usually formulated in "parts" or "percent". You can use any units of measure that you want, and you will get the same glaze... just more or less of it. You will notice that all the numbers add up to about 100 (before additions of colorants, etc). Treating each number as a measure of grams gives a 100 gram batch which is a reasonable lower size limit for test tiles or brushing on small wares.
(In theory you could treat each unit as a milligram or something, but weighing mg amounts requires special equipment and is prone to errors from minor air currents, etc.)
But once you have picked a glaze for production, feel free to scale up to as much as you want. I wouldn't mix 100 pounds of glaze, for example, simply because it would take too long to get through it all... but if you use it a lot and are running production, it might be perfectly reasonable for you.
