Favorite Cone 10 Clays

What are your favorite cone 10 clay bodies for throwing? My favorites in no particular order include:

  1. Soldate 60 (Laguna)
  2. B-mix with Sand (Laguna)
  3. B-mix with Grog(Laguna)
  4. Rod's Bod (Laguna)
  5. Stoney White (Laguna)
  6. Half & Half (Laguna)
  7. Abador (Laguna)

Soldate 60 is excellent for throwing large bowls and platters. B-mix is a wonderful clay body for bowls, mugs and other pieces. Rod's Bod is also good for throwing large pieces and is also a good body for general throwing. Stoney White stands up well and is good for throwing flat pieces like platters and also for hand-building. Half & Half is a wonderful clay with a warm yellow color and is a good body for general throwing. Abador has the look of an earthenware clay but doesn't have much grit to it and throws real nicely.

fun question:

  1. soldate60 as my regular standard clay.
  2. black mountain as a black clay for unglazed pieces - great overall feel too.
  3. woodfire - great glazed or unglazed. rough & toothy finish
  4. sculpture claybody - great grog content for large pieces. glazed or not, comes out fine
  5. plain old porcelain!

Are those all Laguna clays?

i think the clay names are almost standard across laguna & other suppliers. i buy my clay from Aardvark in santa ana and they supply a similar clay as laguna (only it's actually formulated better & works better then laguna's clay does).

i wouldn't be surprised, if across USA at least, we can refer to clays like "black mountain" or "sculpture claybody" and get something like we expect.

somewhere in the past a lot of these clays were developed by various colleges for their own use & thru the colleges the recipies were passed around. the suppliers provided the clays.

i've reviewed other supplier catalogs and read similar names so i suspect they are interchangeable names?
