Make Pottery out of solid Jade Block...

Hello All, I am sort of new to Pottery. I am trying to make some good Pottery from jade (that stuff is hard to cut!)I found someone who sells raw jade on line at

formatting link
under the raw jadetab on their navigatin bar. Does somebody here know if the prices theyare charging are fair (It seems like a lot of $$$ to me, but they sayits good stuff but I dont know anyone who would know). I'm interestedin one of their small sizes of jade block. They call it "Polar Jade",and of course, say its the best neprite in the world, like everybodyelse does im sure. But I've never heard of it before. Don't laugh.Like I said, I'm just starting out. It looks like a good jade, becausethey list their jewelry and carvings on the site, and they look prettygood, and they say they use the same raw jade for those. Thanks a million, RedRidersCR250R

Red i think what you really might want to do is find out about sculpture or a sculpture group. No offense but the only way i can see this as applying to pottary is if you take the remnants and grind it up for iclusion in a glaze recipeee.

Now what i do know about jade is that it can take very well to polishing but the quality depends on the region. I do know that chinese jade is very rare and expensive but it is considered to be the best.

i like the "hard to wedge" reply. definitely! redrider, what you are looking to do is definitely in the sculpture genre rather than pottery. but good luck with it.

It also has very toxic dust and you need to wear a mask when carving it. Like the others suggested though, this is a pottery group, working in clay which is then fired in a kiln. :o) In NZ we have jade, or green stone or pounamu depending on your preference. The Maori people value it very highly. Annemarie
