Q. about glazing techniques

First of all, I'm not a potter, I'm an interested onlooker. I have some questions, I wondered if it's appropriate to ask them here. I don't have access to a university library and our local library has nothing that will help. If you can recommend any books that would be good too.



I would like to learn more about the glazing techniques used by potters mostly between the two world wars. I have a particular interest in Clarice Cliff where the patterns were painted onto stock white ware using interesting glazing techniques as well as painting.

I suggest you just do some searches for Clarice Cliff, google for instance. There is a lot of information out there about it.

There is nothing special about these glazes, They are just standard industrial glazes and so is the glaze in the decoration The special thing is only in the design and application of the graphics.

Interestingly enough Claris Cliff pottery that does not have the 'Bizaar" designs has very little value. ie floral designs

There are a couple of ranges, including the Bizaar range that are valuable. Actually remembered I had a site in favourites. I realised I had grown up eating off a Clarice Cliff dinner set a couple of years back. It is of course not one of the valuable designs :o( Still kindof cool.

Thanks for all the input. I've decided to follow my curiosity further and have enrolled in an evening class in basic pottery starting September!
