A new sewing chair

I just received my new Reliable Sewing chair and it is a real improvement over the wooden chairs I have been using. It is an office type chair that is specifically designed for production sewing and is adjustable for height, tilt of seat, back height, and back lean. I have only used it a little bit, after assembly, but it should help ease the pains that sometimes result from long hours of sewing. The height adjustment is a particularly nice feature, in that there are three different heights that I come across in the normal course of operation in the sewing room. They ship it with flat glides for the feet as they say that if you put rollers on a sewing chair it tends to move around due to the pushing on the peddle that comes with sewing. makes sense to me as there is no moving when I tried it, as opposed to my wife's office chair that I borrowed to test the theory out. She tried it out and immediately acquired chair lust so I am going to order one for her. The link shows the chair, but I ordered it from another place in Florida. The price with shipping is $184.00, so it is not the cheapest chair you can find. I do know that the stuff that you get at Office Max, Staples, and others of that ilk might be cheaper, but if you read the reviews on their websites, you will see that a lot of them have problems of quality vrs. price. Time will tell as to the quality of this one, but it seems to be the standard of the industry. It went together without any need for tools and should be easy for anybody to assemble. So far 5 stars.

I am still on the 'great chair quest' too. There's a new one here. It is quite lovely but after use, does have some flaws. The wheels roll much too easily. I've thought of spilling some ice cream on the floor, letting it set-up a while, and rolling back and forth in it. The front edge of the seat is a little too wide and interferes with using the knee lift on the SM. It crosses my mind to pull a girdle up on it or maybe an old elastic bandage. Must be one around here somewhere. I'm reluctant to whine that I really would enjoy a little pillow cushion to snug against the small of my back. When I complained about that to Val, she asked why I didn't just put one there? Val shows no mercy and takes no hostages. Polly

You might try replacing the rollers with glides, which should be available from any home improvement store. Home depot, Lowes, ect. Take one of the rollers along when you go looking, and see if the plug in shank is the same size and then get how ever many you need. There are various types available. felt bottoms, teflon, rubber, whatever. Not too expensive for a set of 4 at 3-5 dollars.

Thanks, John. I really hadn't realized that glides just might be available to replace the wheels. I haven't gone flying across the room yet but there is a problem when I'm trying to heave a heavy quilt around and the chair launches into reverse. Polly

Are the glides the same height as the rollers? Seems like if they are, you could just put glides on half the legs, making it easier to move the chair around. A good chair is sort of heavy. I like my wheels. Tile floor (smallish tiles, lots of ridges) makes it harder to go scooting off inadvertently, but I can still roll a little bit to get to the ironing board. Roberta in D

No, the rollers are usually taller than the glides. At least the ones I have seen.

I thought I would give an interim report about the Chair. After 2-8 hour days sewing while using it, I can pronounce it a great help in the relieving of discomfort and muscle ache. I had to play with the various settings until I came up with the combination that seemed to work for me. Once I found that sweet spot, I didn't touch it and it made the long sewing sessions almost effortless. In the past, if I did an 8 hour stretch of sewing, the next day I was shot. Not so now. I have even convinced my wife to use one in her office, for those long sessions at the computer. I ordered another one yesterday for her. So there you have it; an unqualified recommendation. Happy sewing, or computing.
