Pat's Original Virginia Fife and Drums Corps is proud to play birthday songs for the Octo-boos!

They are playing an extra song "Sunrise, Sunset" in honor of my SonOne, who has a birthday this week!

I'm another October born and want for my birthday the same thing I wanted last year. We're still looking for a great chair for the sewing room. Has anyone found one that is wonderful? My sewing room has two secretarial chairs that are really pitiful. I think I could get by without one that does massages, vibrates or has a foot rest but I have yet to find one that I want to bring home. What are you sitting on? Polly

My secretary chair is at least 5 years old and I love it! It is very comfortable, but cost just under $100,

5 or 6 years ago. In the last 3 years I have added a cover over the back with pockets to hold scissors and stuff.. Real handy! The next project will be to add a piece to cover the seat and hang down on each side with pockets there too, so I can put the present pattern there while I am working on it. Barbara in FL

So far, I haven't found one that is worth talking about. Got the heater/shaking chair last year....thought it'd help my back.....I'm better off with a heating pad and the TENS.

It's like sewing machines -you need to try out a lot of them to find the right fit. Had one from Ikea once, very comfy and fit me just right, but didn't last too long. Have 4 different ones now (no Ikea), but can't tell you brands. Roberta in D, where it wouldn't help you anyway

I know, Roberta, it wouldn't help me anyhow. I've tried on a couple of dozen and there's always something wrong with them. Some feel like they're going to hurl me out the door the first chance they get. Some are too hard or too soft. Why does this story remind me of The Three Bears? Polly

Hmm... Are you a bit on the short side? (You must have said something once that made me think so.) See if you can find a "youth size" adjustable chair. I actually have one, very like a normal secretary chair in that the height is adjustable and it's on wheels. The neat thing about it is the back, which can be moved forward for people with shorter legs. (I bought it for the color.) Roberta in D

Well, Goldilocks, to find the 'just right one' you'll have to keep on trying on! The thing about chairs in stores is that they are set up for Ms Average. You need to go at a time when they are not going to be busy, and you need an assistant to help you try out. There are so many variables on good chairs these days that you have to get the combination of setting just right for you. For instance, you have to get the rake of the seat right with the angle you like the back set at. The height is the easiest of all the settings to decide on. If you have short legs, the you would need the seat angle set differently from me, say, as I have longer legs. You would need your seat set to slope down towards the floor more. Mechanical settings are probably more reliable than hydraulic or gas workings. The one I have now is very like my car seat - it has side supports on the back and the seat, as well as all the variables. Also, it certainly wasn't the most expensive. Be prepared to take any old colour - it would be a shame to get one you like and then find you don't like puce - the only colour it comes in. So, ask that question before you start all the fixing! . Just for the fun of it, I searched 'secretarial chair' and good gracious at the variables. Had to laugh at the description of one I particularly liked. It said, " load limit 250 pounds". Now, really. Shall I place the bathroom scales by the sewing room door? Do I tastefully decorate the chair with a cushion that discreetly says "do not sit here if . . . "? Buying a chair is not as easy as you'd think. Polly

I see those chairs at the sewing machine store and sat in one when I took the lesson for my new machine. After a couple of hours I did ask the gal how much. It was that comfortable. She didn't know offhand and I figured it was more than I wanted to spend anyway since I just bought the new machine. It may have been this one:

like just under $500. You surely would want to sit in the thingand test it before buying IMO.I have a chair I bought from a used office supply store. It isn't bad but not perfect. Maybe I should ask for a new chair for my bd?Please report back if you buy something?Taria

Polly: At big quilt shows, there is usually one particular vendor who sell WONDERFUL chairs. They come with a variety of features, with excellent variations with reference to the size of the sitter. Maybe someone going to the Really Big Show (& Market) in Houston in a couple weeks will be kind enough to get you a brochure, or at lease a name/phone number.

Another option is to visit a small store that specializes in high quality office furniture. You might have to go into Mobile to find this store.

I have an order into them right now. it's my second order. they are easy to deal with and have NO problem not sending you a bunch of ad emails as requested.

(Told them I wanted their catalog and not emails-they complied.)
