Back from the land of the living dead

Today was the first day back behind a sewing machine. I finished quilting a utility quilt project that I had been thinking about and working on. This is a strange lap quilt that you wrap around yourself with a 4 foot zipper that connects the bottom front of the quilt. I am making it for my wife who has complained that on some nights when she is sitting and watching tv, the cold draft creeps up the bottom of the open lap quilt and makes her legs cold. What with the price of natural gas, we keep the furnace turned down a bit so it is imperative that she stay warm when watching those late night shows. I just used a couple of thick cotton chambray pieces of fabric, from one of my bolts of the stuff, and a nice cotton/wool batting filler and quilted it on

2" lines. I have to do the zipper and bind it and she will be warm as toast. Of course I over did the work on it and banged my hand and caused a bit of weeping from the healing wound. So, I have set myself back a few days of recovery. But, it was worth it to be sewing again. I feel so damn helpless some times having to deal with this stupid hand of mine. Probably because I have never really injured myself before and I don't seem to be able to just sit down and heal it. Type A people are not good patients.

Ah, it is so good to hear that you still have a wife. When my own sweetheart had something like viral glandular conjunctivitis (I think that was an extremely expensive way to say he had highly-contagious pink eye), he wasn't allowed tv, to read, any company or to do anything that required seeing. Those days lasted a very long time for a fellow who probably adjusted every instrument in ICU when he was the patient. Yes, indeed. We wives know a lot about 'type A' people. Try real hard to behave, John. With profound sympathy to your dear wife, Polly

I use to get that sort of thing when I swam in a lake near our home while growing up in Seattle. It probably was polluted and a toxic waste dump, but that was before we all had been clued in to that sort of concern. Those were terribly long days of recovery, for a Type A child. I probably caused the early demise of my dear mother due to the cumulative effects of my presence within her sphere of interest.

Easier said than done. I know I should, but there always seems to be something that I think I could, should do, and then I bang the damn hand and there you go again. You are right. Sit down, shut up, get well. Then sew.

Great to hear that you're back at the sewing machine! But sorry you bashed your hand! Take a deep breath, enjoy the holidays, plan (NOT do) projects for the future -- and rest your hand! You'll be back to full-speed-ahead soon, I hope -- BUT don't rush it!
