What is "lap-quilt" size?

Being a very beggining quilter, I still haven't figured out what folks mean by lap-quilt size or throw size as opposed to bedquilt size.

Kira's Kitties is approaching 50" x 50" when this round is completed and I am trying to decide if I want to do one more complete round or just a top and bottom row to extend the length, then add solid borders echoing the ones around the center panel.

So any tips, hints or suggestions on sizes will be greatly appreciated by quiltmaker and hopeful quiltuser. Our main plan for this quilt is to one that she can cuddle up on the couch or floor with as she reads or watches TV, sit on outside in warmer weather, take a nap with, to be useful.

TIA for your answers.

Depends on the size of the lap! How big is the person you're making it for? A tall/big man would need a bigger/longer lap quilt than a kid or a small woman. For myself, I like one about 52 x 63. That just happens to be the size of a lap quilt I made years ago and it's plenty big so I don't have to keep tugging at it to keep all of me warm.

In the wintertime, I never sit down in my chair in the living room without covering at least my legs and lap with the quilt. When it's colder, I pull it up to my shoulders.

That's what my current quilt is for. I just took a blanket that I already used for those purposes, and am making my quilt that big.

Well my "lap" is sizeable (LOL) and any lap quilt must be large enough for the QI's to snuggle under. So twin size for me.
