What size buttons?

Hi all,

I bought a jacket in the sales and the buttons are a bit too small for the buttonholes - they come undone on their own!

When I go looking for replacement buttons is there an easy way to tell what size to buy based on the size of the buttonholes?

Thanks

Anne

If you like the buttons on the jacket, you could just take a couple of stitches at the end of the buttonhole, shortening it just enough.

It's hard to estimate the size for a replacement button because buttons are three-dimensional. One that is narrower than the buttonhole may or may not fit, depending on the thickness of the button. A dome-shaped button will not fit a buttonhole made for a flat button. Best way is to take the jacket to the store with you, and try the button through the buttonhole before deciding.

Take the jacket with you and try the buttons in the holes... Make them snug but not too snug! :)

Dear Anne,

Buttonholes are planned to be 1/4 inch larger than the buttons. Measure carefully, and then have your pick of buttons. You can also check your closet for buttons a bit larger than those on the jacket, and test them. The thickness of the button has something to do with the size as well.
