I am looking for a good basic machine for my daughter, who is doing a little quilting and sewing. The local shop guy suggest this 521 for about $275. Is this a good idea at that price?
thanks,

please read the "what machine should I buy" FAQ.
Remember, "The local shop guy" has an axe to grind. He wants to make a sale.
No one here will be able to tell you if *that* machine is a good fit for *your daughter*. Has she even tried it out? If $275.00 is you maximum budget, I'd suggest a good 45-year-old Singer like the 401A I am still using every day. Others would suggest their favorite gently used machine. So *our* suggestions are based on our own personal preferences, and my not fit your daughter's needs.
Take her to several shops, let her do a test drive on several different machines.
