Size of lap/snuggle/throw quilts

What size do you make your lap/snuggle/throw quilts--the one's not intended for a bed?

Whom are you planning to snuggle, my dear? If it's a toddler watching cartoons on the sofa, 45 x 60 should be just right. OTOH, if you're throwing one over a big guy, you may want to go up to twin size. Polly (see? I answered a question without saying 'it depends' even once.)

i think i usually make lap quilts 60" x 72", or bigger for bigger people. if i make 12" blocks, i use 4 across and 5 down with 2" sashing and a

3" border. these usually fit most laps. hope this helps.

It was implied...

Michelle,

I wondered the same thing myself. Since I usually design on EQ, and figured they know more than I do (at least), I checked out all their lap quilt templates for size. They vary a bit, but both the average and mean were about 60" square, which also happens to be the width of a queen size mattress. IMO, =B1 a foot is within reason. A quick googling yields results in that same ballpark.

The largest lap quilt I've ever made is 70" x 87" -- a Jackie Robinson design. Others range in size, just as Roberta said.

Whatever size they turn out to be! Seriously, I don't follow patterns and if I plan it out, something may well go wrong, I remember one time I put an extra two blocks on each row then didn't have as many rows as I expected, so it just changed to a square quilt, not a rectangular one!

LOL! Actually, I'm making two quilts. One for 5'4" woman and another for her 6' husband. :-)

Hi Amy,

Yes, it does. Actually, the tops (there are two) are just about made (probably should have asked the question before I started) and the smallest will 64 X 76. I didn't put any sashing and made 30 12" blocks. Anyway, I'm in the ballpark. ;-)

LOL! Now, I like a practical answer like that. :-)

Thanks Sandy. These will end up being 64 X 76. I've only made bed quilts and they seem kind of small. LOL! But I think I'm hitting it about right from what everyone has said.

In that case, I would say about 64 x 76 would be... PERFECTAMUNDO! (But you might consider making the other one a little bit larger...)

It depends! :) My group makes Quilts of Valor about 52" by 72". The size may vary a bit depending on the pattern. Pat in Virginia

Wow, Sandy, that must be some lap! I know it wasn't for you.

I would call 70"x87" a good size for a twin bed quilt. Pat in Virginia

LOL! Keep in mind that this was a Jackie Robinson pattern, and she's quite tall. She told us all that she liked lap quilts to be generous .... ;)

I prefer a size that is big enough to wrap around your body so make something in the 55" to 60" by 68" to 72". This is a good snuggle size.
