What size fabric?

I don't know why right now I can not think straight. The kit I want it on 16 count Aida. The finish size is 14x12. I want 28 ct even weave. What size fabric do I need? I have 14x18 but I don't think it will fit? Thanks Donna D

Morning Donna:

I've been known to have 'brain farts' like that too, so don't worry. I have a piece which I swear I counted and recounted and refigured to make sure I had enough fabric, and it's way too small.

The 16 aida translates to 32 even weave, so if you are doing it on 28, you are going to need more fabric.

Now 14 inches on 16 count aida = 224 stitches, and 12 inches on 16 count = 192 stitches.

Now divide your stitches by 14 (half of 28 - since you are working on evenweave not aida.

224/14 =16 192/14 = 13 3/4 (roughly)

Add 6 inches to each number (for framing)

Final size fabric 22 by 19

Now, I'd strongly recommend you check my figures (since I've only had one cup of coffee this morning), but that should be right.

Here's a helpful place that will give you a cross stitch fabric calculator. Enjoy !

Good tool. Basically, when you step down from 16 to 14 ct, you have to increase the fabric size by about 12%. In the shop, we just do everything by stitch count, just divide as Marg did - total number of stitches by stitches per inch, the add your margin for finishing. Standard is 3" all around, or

6" to the width and length totals. But, it also depends on what your framer can work with, and how comfortable you are, and the finishing intent.

With kits, they can be cut very close - maybe under 2" margin, or some I've seen have 4" - so I'd take a look at your chart and do the math. Or bring it to your LNS, and make them do it (we do it for folks all the time).
