Bad earthquake in New Zealand

AT least 65 people died in the earthquake that hit New Zealand's second city Christchurch on Tuesday and the death toll may rise, Prime Minister John Key said.

"The death toll I have at the moment is 65 and that may rise. So it's an absolute tragedy for this city, for New Zealand, for the people that we care so much about," Mr Key told TVNZ.

We are so grateful that our family are on holiday on North Island. They live only a couple of miles from the Lyttleton, at the moment they don't know how bad their village/ friends/house have been hit.

Oh no! We've got friends that live in Lyttleton. Do you know if there is bad damage in the city? I don't dare to clog the phone lines.

Civil Defence are asking people to not use phone lines unless necessary. Apparently you can text alright. Recuers are still hearing from people trapped under collapsed buildings.

Thank you for the link; I'd completely forgotten about Stuff; had it bookmarked ages ago. The pics were really scary, as were the reports about burglary on missing persons' houses. I emailed my friends and got a reply today. They are unharmed but had to give up their house since it's no longer safe to live in and are now staying with her mum's in the countryside. The mailed a phone number and I'll call them tonight. I'm really glad they are not hurt, but I hope they can do something about the house without too much expense.
