The earthqauake hit Christchurch (right side of the Sth Island)
10-30km deep. No deaths but 'alot' of structural damage Some images at the national newspaper

Sadly a light plane crash on the other coast where 9 died. So a sad time for little NZ

Jeanne is in Auckland, in the North Island, so she is quite a way from the epicentre. Hopefully that means she's OK. . In message , Taria writes

Jeanne is on the North Island, so she should have been unaffected physically.

She's been posting on Facebook, and thankfully, she was unaffected by the earthquake.
We are both in Auckland (2 hrs by plane) &have not felt anything. I understand a few places in the lower Nth island had slight tremors. I believe a number of yrs ago there was somebody from down Chch way who occassionally wrote to this group.
