Best mono for machine applique

What mono thread is best for machine applique?

On my first machine applique project, I used clear and it was shinny. On my second project, I used smoke colored and it was less shinny but still shinny.

Oh for crying out loud, Jerry. It's hard to believe somebody in North Alabama doesn't know that shinny is another name for moonshine or corn likker. The word you need is shiny. After recent discussions here, it seems one that does not reflect much light is SewArt's matte finish. I haven't been able to find it yet. Let us know if you locate an online source . . . and no 'shinny' until it is five o'clock somewhere. Polly

Polly - you should definitly have posted a "spew warning" on that reply. I honestly laughed out loud!!!

For both of you.... SewArt is the one to use if you don't want shine. Please go to

- they have the clear AND the smoke, and you can order just a spool, or the mini cones.

Now...... no "shinny" for either of you! That stuff can make you go blind! :-)

I save our jelly jars for some 'way down in the Swamp' neighbors who grow a lot of corn. Wouldn't you think they would at least bring me a jar of corn jelly by way of a thank you? Polly

The monofilament from SewArt Int. is matte finish. This is the one that Harriet Hargrave recommends. I love it.

Jelly? I'd rather have the broth, that at least has a kick for 'medicinal purposes', ya know

OK! I can take it. Since joining this group, I've been squished, helped, and now ridiculed. But I love it.

suggested by Patti S I found both clear and smoke SewArt thread.

Pati Cook said the thread had a matte finish.

Do both the clear and smoke have a matte finish?

Polly, is this the thread you have looking for? Or, is there another SewArt thread that has the matte finish?

Yep, both the dark and the light/clear are matte finish. SewThankful also carries Precencia (?) thread, which I have been using lately for piecing. I got a cone of neutral 60 weight and it is fantastic. Also got a "Thread Candy" packet of 4 different neutrals that I have been using for hand piecing. Love it. I may like it even better than the Aurifil!! Of course I got it on sale, especially the cone. But I think the price is well worth it if you look at it as cost per yard/meter of thread. I may end up getting more of the 60 wt. for machine quilting, especially for the bobbin--- you can get a lot more on the bobbin.

Hi Pati Isn't the Presencia great stuff??? I love it too.... I tried a couple of the "thread candy" packages and I've had really good luck with it, and also the "King Tut" brand, which comes in fabulous variegated colors. I've even dabbled with the Ricky Tims "Razzle Dazzle" line a wee bit, and it's just beautiful. I really like the sew thankful site for threads. They have a free shipping promo every couple of months, and I like to load up then..... I'm on their email list - it's worth it.

Now w-a-i-t ! I mentioned to a friend that our group said that the SewArt thread had a matte finish. She brought me a spool - actually a cute little cone. Just ain't no tellin' how old it might be - the store said they didn't carry SewArt but dear tenacious friend did manage to find a spool there. I've tested it and conclude as follows: it is very agreeable to SM with, and it certainly is shinny shiny. Whatever. So. The question is: Is there a SewArt invisible nylon (or other fiber) thread that specifically claims to be *matte* finish? New and improved perhaps? I am now more confused but at a higher level. Polly, if you are confused, I'm in real trouble.

Yeah, it is great stuff! I am also on her e-mail list and it is so friendly and fun. I haven't tried the King Tut or Razzle Dazzle yet, probably because I am more of a "quilting to complement the piecing" type quilting. And usually want to hide more of it than show it off.

One of these days I will have some sort of machine with stitch regulator and be able to do "fancy" quilting using "fancy" thread. Until then I do a lot of invisible and stitch in the ditch and simple diagonals and so on. It works, and I have several tops waiting for the quilting they deserve.

Sew Thankful has a lot of stuff on the site. I can spend lots of time just looking and thinking about all of it. Lots of embellishments too.

In my area shinny is something one does to climb a pole or tree, as in "Shinny up that apple tree and shake the apples down." Shine is short for that likker sold in Mason jars. Debra in VA See my quilts at

Broth? Is that what ya'll call moonshine? Way too funny! I'll have to pass it along to my friend from Franklin County, aka the moonshine capital of Virginia. Debra in VA See my quilts at
