Batik squares

I am the proud new owner of a stack of batik squares. There are around

30 of the 4-inch size and 20 of the 5-inch. No two alike, probably. I bought them with an eye to applique, but now looking at them I am just mad to have them all in one piece. Problem is I have no batik yardage and right now I'm not about to go spend money for more than a half yard or two. (Tax day looms large in this household).

So my question is.... what kind of pattern is there for a pretty wall- hanging type of thing that would use my very varied squares? I could even do something larger cuz I can probably get another 20-30 of the 4- inch size. Maybe.

Anybody got a pretty idea?

I don't know of any patterns that would work, but if you don't find any send them to me and I will see if I can come up with something... :-)

There's several quick and easy options. Pair up like sizes, mark thru the diagonal center and sew on both sides of the line 1/4 in. from the line. Cut down the drawn line. That will give you pairs of half square triangles to make into blocks- use the HSTs from the 4 in. squares in the center, border in 1 in. strips (cut from the 5 in. squares, maybe?) and then use the 5 in. HSTs around that- check out the math FIRST as I'm only throwing out random thoughts here. OR make

20 in. blocks mixing the 4 and 5 in squares in an interesting pattern. OR cut the 5 in. squares into 1.25 in. strips and frame the 4 in. blocks in some way- maybe Attic Windows would work for you? And there are any number of "regular" block patterns that will accomodate those sizes. Gee, you can go about anywhere with those! Grab some graph paper or EQwhatever-number and get busy doodling! And be sure and take some photos and show us what you do with the squares. Batiks are my very favorite of fabrics- loverly to work with them. ;-)

Just bored today. Made 9 postcards yesterday and am drawing a blank for an ATC swap which I wanted to make today, but no ideas, so thought I'd contribute in my own way to this group LOL

I'm not sure how it'd work as a wall hanging, though I think it'd make a nice throw (though it might be a bit small for that), but a simple four patch arrangement, alternating with solid colors, might be nice.. something like this, maybe?

That's a great idea Mary. Have we met before? If so, sorry not to have remembered. If not, welcome. . In message , snipped-for-privacy@gmail.com writes

Something else I was thinking of, though A. not a wall hanging type thing and B. possibly not the best use of pre-cut squares, is that batik, in short chunks (like 4-5"), would make, imo, an awesome awesome scrappy binding. But wow, you'd prolly need alot for that..
