UFO List (Long)

Believe it or not, I have a UFO list! Yeah, really. Here is the UFO list I am submitting to the 2008 UFO Challenge organized by my Guild. To participate, we must submit a list of one to ten UFO. (Yes, I have more than ten.) We need to submit a numbered list with a description of UFO and the required tasks to completion. We can be entered in the December 2008 prize drawing each time we meet the Challenge rules for a listed UFO. I want this to be fun, and I like the idea of having opportunity to win prizes.

So, I listed ten projects I really WANT to finish but do not have a specific purpose or deadline. In other words, these will be fun to execute, but I won't have pressure. If I get all finished, fine; if not, what ever gets finished will be a bonus. By the way, I will try to 'shop my stash' while I complete these projects.

  1. Sampler Table Topper (top) 38" square; teal and plum on tan; 4 squares baste, quilt, label, bind or turn edge

  1. Bear Paw Table Topper (top) 35" x 62"; red, navy, green on gray same as #1

  1. Virginia Reel Table Topper (top) 30" square; red and gold; 2006 guild mystery same as #1
  2. Angels Lap Quilt (top) 39" square; Debbie Mumm; maroon and green on cream same as #1
  3. 1930's Crib Quilt (top) stack & slash squares; varied colors; 1930 style same as #1
  4. Mystery Crib Quilt (top) mostly bright pink and green; 2005 guild mystery same as #1 (maybe add border)
  5. Jacob's Ladder Twin Quilt (top) black, white and m&m colors; small twin size same as #1
  6. Christmas Lap Quilt (blocks) 6 stack and slash blocks; varied holiday prints design, set blocks together, border, continue as #7
  7. Variable Stars & Squares (blocks for lap quilt) jewel tone prints (jade, garnet); medium size same as #8
  8. Hummingbird Appliqué (block) one small square Panamanian appliqué piece same as #8 (to make small wall hanging)

How about you? Do you have any UFO circling your house?

I'll need to work on that list! But just curious -- what are the guild's rules for the UFO challenge? We do something similar -- and it's fun to compare notes.

We can identify up to 3 projects -- throw one FQ in the pot for each project you identify. To be finished... must be quilted, bound and labeled! For every finished project -- your name goes in once. So maximum opportunity to win is 3. Draw 1 name -- and that person gets the entire pot of FQ's. I have two runner-up prizes.

How do you yours? If someone else does something similar -- please share!

I refuse to call anything I have a UFO! I do, however, have some WIPs that need finishing, and one item on the WIP page of my site is actually a "learning experience" that I have no intention of actually putting into a quilt -- it was just to learn a technique.

That said, I do have some WIPs I need to finish. There's:

Old Rose, which needs borders and quilting, binding, labeling; The mystery quilt from Carol Doak's list, which needs quilting, binding, labeling; Berry Wreath, which needs borders, quilting, binding, labeling; Northwind, which is still in the making-blocks stage.

I also want to put together a simple top for hand quilting, since I enjoy hand quilting so much and since it's been a while since I've done any.

And then there are the Quilted Diamonds, which I'm still hand piecing with no particular plan in mind for how I'm going to use them. I'm just having fun piecing them!

I have 8 UFOs. The really sad thing is that only two require more than binding. I could plow through all six of those in one day if I would just get busy and do it.

Oh, and I have one massive, horrid to handle, backbreaking to quilt fleece quilt I've been promising my younger son for about 4 years. Bad Mom, Bad Mom.

Oh, numbered list:

  1. Put hanging sleeve on gorgeous wall hanging for my Mom.

  1. Do last bit of quilting and bind a 30's repro fabric table topper. Really cute

  2. Bind little wall hanger of the geisha.

  1. Sandwich, quilt, bind a cute quilt top made for my sister

  2. Bind new wall hanging for dining room, tea themed fabric appliqued onto pieced backing.

  1. Add last border, sandwich, quilt and bind quilt for my bedroom. The focus fabric is cream with black ink drawn geishas on it. Supporting roles are played by light gray, confederate blue and marbled black fabrics.

  2. quilt and bind table topper made with vintage fabric. I think it looks uglier than I can even believe. I planned it, put it together. I hate it. But it's small and other people who have seen it like it a lot. I think I'm going to finish the danged thing and give it to one of them for Christmas. Bah, humbug.

Right now my energy is going to a challenge quilt that is for a juried competition. I have never tried anything like this before. I'm sure mine won't make the cut. But, I'm going for it.

Kate: In my guild's UFO challenge, each participant enters a list of 1 to 10 UFO, and chips in 50 cents per person. Our method is somewhat similar to yours. The item must be numbered and described. The committee will pick a number (out of a hat) to assign the project due in two months. IOW, in December the number for the February project will be announced. In February, participant must have the item checked off the master list AND must show the project in Show and Tell. The item must be ready to use and must be returned in the correct month to be counted. Anyone who cannot attend a meeting has the option of having a friend take responsibility. Each counted item will put her/his name into the drawing for the prizes at the end of the year. So, if I get my ten UFO done on time, I have ten opportunities for a prize. I understand the guild has supplied funds for some nice prizes. I like the FQ drawing your guild conducts, and I hope you win!

are you the lone quilter in your neck of the woods? have you thought of starting your own guild? Our started about 10 years ago with 9 or 10 ladies.... and now we have 80 or so! Start simple... but I'm sure the word will spread! :-)

Thanks for a great idea, Pat. I'd like to add my list of UFOs. Some are OT ( cards ) others are on-topic ( quilts ). These are in order of importance...

  1. OT: Thanksgiving Card - Layout is designed and the images are stamped. Need to finish layering the colour with watercolour crayons. ( 2 cards remain to be completed ).

  1. OT: Thinking of you/Inspirational cards - I need to design and either watercolour or colour with prismacolour pencils and Gamsol several cards to send to my father during his chemotherapy.

  2. OT: Christmas Cards - Design a card using a Thomas Kincade holiday stamp. Once the layout is decided upon, it requires stamping and colouring with Prismascolour Pencils and Gamsol. I only need one as the other Christmas cards have been made using a "mass-production" friendly design.

  1. "Thinking of You" lap sized hug quilt for my Father - In pieces on sewing table. Requires piecing, borders to be cut and sewn, then sent out for quilting and eventually mailing. ( N.B., This would have been completed sooner if I hadn't changed my mind about the one I was working on for him. After completing most of the "Harmony and Tranquility" blocks, I took a look at it and decided it just didn't say "Father." So, I went back to the drawing board and started over with a new quilt shopping only from my stash ).

  2. "Annie's Garden" - Lap sized. Requires completion of hand-quilting and binding.

  1. "Harmony and Tranquility" - Lap sized. Requires completion of remaining blocks, adding borders, deciding on hand-quilting motif, hand-quilting, binding.

Just going to put on the ones I'm WORKING on right now: B's plane quilt.: gotta rethink the backing as the quilt 'grew' by one entire row of blocks so the backing is NOT enuf.......... quilting the Christmas WUH and get it gussied up. This one MUST be done by Christmas this year:) Always working on the Starters/enders in 2" squares.

Have 1/2 diamond blocks sewn together of afghan.
