Only half brain cell working again

Pat(on the hill) suggested a log cabin block with alternate ones on point so I figured I needed the alternate ones to be smaller. Are you with me so far? I cant find the link I have to find out whatsize square I need to make 1/4 sq triangles for the smaller ones. They are 71/2"with the smaller ones 5

1/2"square. I do hope someone can tell me. TIA

Estelle, first, you want half square triangles for the corners, not quarter squares. I figure this the low tech way... draw the block on paper, full size or to scale. Measure the parts, adding seam allowances as needed. You will probably end up with some odd numbers. sigh. I would round the size of the center down, the triangles up, more than needed. This will 'float' the center a bit away from the block edge. Making the triangles a bit (an eighth to a quarter inch total) allows for minor seam variations and such so that you can trim the blocks to the right size. (I prefer to make blocks a bit large and trim to size. much less frustrating and time consuming than having to unsew and resew a too small block. IMNSHO)

IF you know the finished size of the block, the half square triangles will finish at half that size. add an inch to that to cut the squares for the HSTs.

Have fun, Pati, > Pat(on the hill) suggested a log cabin block with alternate ones on point so

I was planning to do the whole thing by foundation piecing. So sorry to have confuddled you. That way you can do the log cabin part and the corners just on the foundation square. I always do Log Cabin by foundation - it is so quick and stays square!! . In message , Estelle Gallagher writes

When I've done quilts on point, I've always done the alternate squares the same size as the pieced blocks. I had the same questions regarding 1/2 and 1/4 square triangles on my latest quilt as well. Someone here - don't remember who to give proper credit - suggested taking the finished pieced block and placing it diagonally on my cutting mat for measuring the size of the squares to cut for the 1/2 and 1/4 triangles. That was the least technical and easiest tip I've ever seen and it worked fabulously! Hopefully I can retain that bit next time!
