chinese coins? noodles between the rows of quarter nickles. or flying geese between noodles? use the nickles for the FG by cutting them into 1 rectangle and 2 sqs and mixing them up for that scrappy look.

that is if i'm understanding nickles are 5" sqs and noodles are wof strips? freezing my patootie off here, time to go find a hot drink and my quilt to keep warm. ttfn, jeanne

And we have a heat warning ( 105°) from the nice weatherman. He says to stay in an air conditioned room and drink lots. We can do that. Polly

Surprised you all can't figure out what nickles and noodles are. Try jelly rolls (noodles) and nickles (charms) LOL

I am waiting for a good reply to this. I have two jelly rolls and two packs of charms (Moda) that I am all ready to piece but can't find anything I want to do. I don't really want to cut up the charms although I thought about doing 1/2 square triantles....easy to do and then do some strips with triangles on the ends. Can';t think of the pattern name now. I might even do some 1/4 sq. triangles in the middle.

Anyone know if Moda has a book or some free patterns? I know there are a lot of online quilt stores now offering nickles and noodles in all different fabric although personally I like the Moda ones.

I recently was gifted with 4 different Moda jelly rolls and would also appreciate patterns that wouldn't require the purchase of additional fabrics. Of course, I wouldn't mind using my stash but I'd rather not purchase more fabric right now.

There are lots of patterns out that use both. But not free ones that I know of. Sorry.

I searched and haven't come up with anything I like. I have an idea for a pattern to combine the two. Maybe if it works I can publish it!

Howdy!

The Fat Quarter Shop has several ideas, patterns for sale and some freebies, too (many of the For Sale patterns are easy enough to figure out just by looking). They have a good collection of more Jelly Roll/Noodles, too, just in case... . ;-D

Check out the patterns at Quiltville - may be some there that would work.

I know Nickels are 5" charms.

The only jelly roll I know is a dinner roll with jelly on it, and noodles are pasta.

Could someone please tell us what size cut noodles are? Could be 10 inches by 30 feet long as far as I know.

Noodles are 2 1/2" strips cut the whole width of the fabric.

I've been thru their patterns. There are a couple that would work and they're not too hard to figure out either.

Thanks. I just hate not knowing terminology.

Those would be good for a quickie bar or strip quilt. Sashing strips and corner posts, applique pieces like long vines, triangles, and lotsa stuff. Debra in VA See my quilts at

long vine applique is usually cut on the bias so you can curve it like real vines. sorry to be a spoil sport. :) jeanne

There is "creative" pressing that will do the same thing even if straight cut. I've seen it done, often times when the presser didn't want the curved effect. LOL

I have always been able to cut curved pieces so far. Debra in VA See my quilts at

I asked Pat Speth (the author of Nickel Quilts). She said that she is not aware of any patterns which purposely combine those two items. However, she said that a number of her patterns would work well with the combination of the two as one often cuts the nickel squares to 2.5 inch strips.
