Wacky quilt idea

Ok, so I have used up a lot of the squares that I had left over from the quilt. I made a bolster for the bed to hide some pillows. I made some more machine covers. I made some place mats and service mats for the dinning room table. I still have quite a number of 2-1/2" squares. Not so many of any given group of colors so that I could make a pattern of choice. I am thinking about dumping the squares in a box and shaking them up and then pulling them out of the box one by one and making a quilt top out of the random selection of colors. Now before you gag, they are all in the same value range so they would not clash. In effect they would be a crazy quilt type of look. A sort of a Random Act of Quiltyness, if you will. I think I may be going off the deep end here but so what. Other than the effort, what do I have to lose? Your input would be appreciated. Has anybody tried this type of thing before? Maybe a whole new approach to quilting will come of this. Zen Quilting.

Sigh, I am getting a server error when i try to send this post, so I will try this one more time. Then that is it.

I likw your "put them in a bag and pull out and use" approach but I suggest you make four patch units then sash the four patch blocks together with something neutral like green or navy blue. The sashing will give a little uniformity to the quilt.

Lots of us do this type of quilt. It's fun! I love a surprise. Have to make sure they are really mixed before you start. Or another idea I've been thinking about: use a sudoku grid to randomize, if you have a suitable number of colors. Roberta in D

Go for it! Sounds like your colors already pretty much go together.. Quick suggestion, though.... separate the squares into two bags - one of lights and one for darks. One Rule: you cannot use a square that is pulled out of the bag that matches any of the ones already used in a block... you MUST use it in the next square, though. I did this with 2" strips to make a country-color log cabin -- turned out great! Just my 2 cents worth. ME-Judy

Hey, why not? Tarot cards work that way. You can come up with some neat insights from those, why WOULDN'T it make a cool quilt?

Go for it!
