source of design ideas?

For anyone who makes circular quilts, this might be a source of design themes...

"You got that setting from a WHAT???"

A lot of the photos aren't clear or big enough, though.

Quilts from Japanese manhole covers

Some US manhole references

It is quite intriguing to look about at the thought and design artistry that used to be put into some very mundane items. Now such items are pressed out in a standard pattern by the thousand. I understand that there are economic reasons for mass production, but I wish "mass production" did not equate so often to "bland or blank".

My sister many years ago made a hobby of taking wax crayon rubbings of manhole covers in the local area, there are certainly some weird and wonderful designs out there!

Thanks for posting Jack - certainly some inspiration there!

There are two wonderful quilting books on this subject.

Quilting with Manhole Cover and Treasures Underfoot (QwMC2). There is also a travelling quilt exhibit that I've seen at various shows around the country. I think it also was exhibited internationally.

And, if I'm not mistaken, wasn't "Pat from Va." or "Kris from Va." involved in these books/projects? I thought one or both had quilts included in the books.

They were terrific!
