Quilty things to see/do in Kaiserslautern/Frankfurt?

Does anyone know of anything quilty to see or do in Kaiserslautern or even in Frankfurt?

I won't have a car while visiting, so it would have to be reachable by foot or public transport.

Thanks, Hanne in London

You are *sew* lucky!! I lived in Kaiserslautern for 4 years and loved it!! Pretty much everything's accessible by foot (it's a bit like London, where you have plenty of public transportation and everything's a reasonable walk away - you Europeans know how to do it right!). I wasn't a quilter back then (it was long enough ago that I'm sure the places I *do* remember aren't there anymore!), but it was a marvelous city: friendly people, plenty of English spoken (sew there's little chance of not being understood if you ask where the nearest loo is), lots to see and buy, and not enough time to do it all!

Just make sure to wear sensible shoes (shoes you can walk in all day), bring plenty of cash (you have eat lunch at least once at an "Imbiss stand" (or "fast food" kiosk in the middle of the street - tastes much better than it sounds!! - Brats with "coarse rolls" - yum-o - are the specialty) and have fun!! :)

I lived there from 1982 - 1988. We loved it! I wasn't a quilter then either, but did a lot of sewing. I bought my dressmaking fabric from the PX. The only thing I bought from a German store was lace drapery fabric...from a store that was located right near the entrance to Ramstein Air Base. I brought it back to the US and had it made into pleated drapes for my living room and dining room. They were so easy to wash...throw them in the bathtub with a little dishwashing liquid, rinse them out, and hang them back up damp....done! Wish I could help you more; have fun.

Oooh! I was there from 88-93! I lived near Ramstein! A little town on the outskirts called Weillerbach! :-) You're bringing back some wonderful memories!! :-)

Since we were talkin' about dryers in another thread, and now Germany in this one, it makes me think about the washer that we had. It was in the "master bedroom" and the hose emptied into the bathtub! Dependin' on how nasty the wash was, it was a real bear to clean the tub afterwards! :-)

Thanks for bringing back some lovely memories!! K-Town was a great place - like everywhere else in GE! :-)

We lived south of Vogelweh, in a village called Trippstadt (near the Karlstahl - if you ever hiked there). My washer and dryer were laundromat-types with slugs welded in the coin slots! One temp., one speed, one water level!

Yes, yes, yes, yes!!! I never hiked there, but I've visited that town! I had a good friend that lived there!! :-)

I'm assuming that you shopped at the BX at Vogelweh? Or did you prefer "the economy?"

When were you there?? What a teeny tiny world! :-)

Ya'll are really bringing back some wonderful memories!! Such wonderful people (locals and servicepeople/wives alike). I came so close to "going on the economy" - but when it came down to it, my first marriage was dissolving (not a bad thing) and I missed my parents ...

Yep! Same here! We were able to rent a second floor apartment from some of the most wonderful sisters ever (the Frau Bouquet). It has been a hotel at one point and we occupied an entire floor! 3 HUGE bedrooms, a guest room, a "den," etc ... for all that, we gladly accepted the washer and dryer as they were! No dishwasher, either! LOL!

You've really made my day!! Thank you!! :-)

It isn't exactly quilting, but it is fabric stuffed with batting: look at the Claes Oldenburg sculptures in the Frankfurt modern art gallery.
