Need help on a block

Hope I can explain this right.I want to make a 9" 2 color block using

4 1/2 sq triangles. What size do I need to cut the squares? If I had all my quilting stuff here I would be able to get the information, but I don't.

For a half-square triangle -- using the method where you put your two squares right-sides together and drawing a diagonal line and sewing on either side of it (1/4") to create 2 half square triangles, you want to cut the squares the finished size you want your HST block + 7/8".

I always make it one inch larger then square it up after I sew it.

So if you finished block is 4 1/2" -- then cut your squares at 5 1/2" and use the technique above and you should end up with 5" UNFINISHED HST.

Is that what you needed?

Either the way I do is based on misinformation, or I am interpreting the question differently.

Yeah you add 7/8" to cut accurate half square triangles from a square. However to cut accurate quarter square triangles from a square you need to add 1 1/4".

So the square you cut from to get four, 4 1/2" quarter square triangles with a quarter inch seam allowance would be 5 3/4".

Hmm... Reading the question again,I am not sure if she wants half square triangles, or quarter squares.

Well, either way between us she is set! :)
