EQ6 Help

I posted a message on the EQ Forum but I've noticed that the activity level is really low there compared with RCTQ. I now consider RCTQ my home discussion group because everyone has been so helpful. I understand that posting to more than one group is not generally accepted but I need help so that I can get started with my next project.

I have designed an on-point quilt exactly the design and size I would like to for my next quilt project. However, I can not get the half blocks and four corner blocks to print. I especially need the rotary cut print out and the half and quarter blocks to be included in the fabric calculations.

I've read all of the help and manual instructions about "clipping a block" but can not find the right combination of steps to get get the blocks clipped.

Help! I really like my design but I' totally stuck.

I don't know if you have joined this forum, but it is the best for getting great answers! I subscribe to the digest version and get one every day. I can't answer your question, but maybe someone from the info-eq forum can.

G'day Jerry from Down Under. I'll have a look at your problem tomorrow (our time - we already enjoying your tomorrow). Cheers Bronnie

KJ, thanks for the link. Just checked it out. It looks like there is lots of information but the format of the discussion board sure makes it difficult to search and navigate to messages. I am using Google to participate in this RCTQ group and it is much easier to use.

Just sign up for the list, Jerry, and you can basically use it like email. You don't have to do any navigating. You can send in your question and receive the answers individually or on a daily digest. You don't have to worry about Google or any other internet interface. You can go back and look at the archives of questions, but when you pose a question, the answers will come in your email. Clear as mud?

Jerry, not sure I am going to be able to explain this as well as I would like but will try.

For yardage amounts: use a square block divided into 2 triangles for the side setting triangles of your layout and a square divided into 4 triangles for the corners. Color one triangle of each of these squares the appropriate color and the others some really wild off the wall not used in the quilt at all color. Rotate to get the correct color showing on the worktable. So far so good? That will give you the amounts you need for the colors you will use as well as the color you don't need and can ignore.

As for cutting: the side setting triangles are actually quarter square triangles to get the long edge on straight of grain, and the corners are half square triangles. Easy way to get the measurements to cut the triangles, measure a block on the diagonal to get the side of the square for the QSTs. Or just measure a square on your cutting mat that size. Add some for "insurance" (technically the measurement for the exact size is the diagonal of the finished square plus 1 1/4". I usually add extra because I can always trim it off a bit, or sometimes because I want to "float" my quilt center and not have the corners of the blocks come exactly to the edge. For the corners, you need 2 squares cut on the diagonal once. The size of these squares is half the diagonal of the finished block, plus 7/8". Again I cut large. (and the easy way to find the size is to put a block/square on point on your cutting mat. put the top and left corners on or near lines. figure out the distance from the left line to the top line.)

You can also get a general idea of the lengths of the sides of the triangles by using the tape measure tool in EQ. I haven't gotten to where I will trust my use of it completely, but can get a general idea.

Hope this helps a bit.

Patti, thanks for the response. I have essentially done what you suggest manually. I read in the EQ6 manual that a new feature of EQ6 was the ability to have the computer automatically "clip" the blocks. However, I have not been able to get it to work. I've tried every approach you can imagine to get EQ6 to give me a print out of a "clipped" block and when none of them worked I worked it out manually.

What can I say? I guess my senior moments are getting more frequent, because I completely forgot I'd had exactly the same problem a few months ago. The reply I had from Penny follows (the same thing I emailed you privately, but I thought maybe someone else might want to see it, too):

This didn't help me much, since I really needed to use Custom Set, but it might help in the future. :)
